COURSE DESCRIPTION:

XR (Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Reality) technology is explored to expand traditional assumptions of animation to include intuitive, innovative, and performative aspects.

In a series of low stakes assignments, students familiarize themselves with immersive 3D technology, including 3D volumetric video and image captures.

This beginner course positions the artist as a member of an inclusive and diverse community to begin developing critical engagement with a broader experimental practice.

It helps animators associate 3D environments with other disciplines like stop motion, 2D animation and drawing and painting.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

Support students in their learning through individual or small group instruction and/or assisting with assignments; meet regularly with the faculty; work with faculty and other academic staff in support of the University's educational goals and objectives; participate in the provision of a safe and secure environment for all members of the University community and its facilities.


  • Inclass Responsibilities:_
  • Helping with VR activities and inclass workshop
  • Helping students launch Steam (VR software) & saving files to appropriate drives and reboot software if needed
  • Keeping students safely away from furniture and other students in the class while in VR
  • Develop a studentstation rotation, where students can all access in a rotating way the VR Stations to complete assignments.
  • Helping any student with sizing of headsets and other accessibility needs
  • Basic safety demonstrations (how to put on headset, how to move around with headset on, how to alert others you're in the room as they can't see you with headset on)
  • Wiping down and sanitizing VR masks between students
  • Helping students with log in needs to classroom computers, and basic familiarity with PC Alienware
  • Making sure to have and keep charging all devices, including wireless Focus and all 6 controllers.
  • Making sure computers, towers and VR work properly for the week's activities, including login information, Steam, and any new software uploads needed to run the latest versions of apps.
  • Additional Responsibilities:_
  • Basic student technical help to support assignment
  • Simple techtrouble shooting includes restarting, software updates, up to date 'updates' on iPads and computers, knowing which apps are used for what assignment, examining assignment guideline needs and helping students make sure they've followed the guidelines appropriately.

QUALIFICATIONS:


  • A graduate degree, undergraduate degree or be currently enrolled in a relevant graduate program;
  • The technical knowledge bulleted below:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey complex concepts clearly;
  • Skill in maintaining a positive and engaging learning environment;
  • Sound knowledge of, and commitment to, healthy and safe work practices.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Teaching Assistants are hired annually on a per-course basis with fixed-term annual contracts renewable to a maximum of 3 years.

  • As mandated by the Ontario Council on Graduate Studies (OCGS), fulltime graduate students may not accept Teaching Assistant or other university related employment in excess of 10 hours per week (or 130 hours per semester).
  • One cannot hold both a Teaching Assistant and Faculty Appointment within the same semester.
