Main Purpose and Function


The Planning Assistant III is responsible for helping implement the City of Vancouver Transportation 2040 Plan (T2040), Climate Emergency Action Plan (CEAP), Vancouver Plan and related projects across a number of areas including walking, cycling, transit and goods movement.

This includes supporting corridor planning studies, data analysis and visualisation, as well as creation of graphics and presentations and coordinating stakeholder engagement.


Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide research, analysis, communications and graphic design support for projects related to the implementation of T2040, CEAP, Vancouver Plan, Corridor planning projects and others.
  • Develop plans, presentations, maps, and data visualization graphics for Council reports, public engagement and internal communications
  • Liaise with staff from a variety of divisions and departments, including Planning, Engineering and Sustainability, and external stakeholders as necessary
  • Provide data analysis support, including use of GIS data, as part of corridor planning and alignment options review and other projects as required
  • Create graphical corridor cross section options and evaluate them against each other
  • Collect, organize, analyze and interpret transportation and land use data
  • Provide support in analyzing and prioritizing transportation networks
  • Attend occasional public events as required outside of regular work hours
  • Perform other technical office and field work duties (site visits) as required
  • Duties to support the branch such as compiling and analyzing various data spreadsheets and management of the photo library
  • On occasion, assisting in coordinating the logistics associated with engagement activities, including organizing and participating in public meetings, preparing mailing lists and public notifications, coordinating logistics, preparing informational and graphic material
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent, supplemented or including postsecondary training in planning, public policy, transportation, Engineering, Urban Planning, Geography, Data Analysis or a related field or equivalent work experience
  • Sound experience as a Planning Assistant II or equivalent work experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of local transportation issues and best practices for sustainable transportation.
  • Clear interest and passion for active transportation & transit, addressing climate change, healthy cities and urban resilience
  • Passion to improve efficiency of existing processes
  • Basic understanding of transportation corridor general needs and constraints as well as associated transportation data
  • Familiarity with the City's transportation network including roads, transit and cycling, as well as transportation policies and regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage priorities, meet deadlines, and function as a team player while also working individually with mínimal supervision.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills and the ability to deal effectively with staff, the public and external agencies are needed.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a diverse group to develop optimal solutions.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive, productive relationships at all levels in the organization and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated consultation, research and analysis skills and a basic understanding of transportation network and circulation needs
  • Advanced graphic skills (to create presentations) and a demonstrated ability to translate complex concepts into accurate, easily readable products.
  • Proven proficiency with analysis/graphic software packages including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Experience with municipal scale transportation planning, policy analysis and street design (walking, cycling and transit) would be an asset.
  • Proficiency with graphic design software packages such as Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop), design software (AutoCAD, SketchUp) as well as ArcGIS software would be an asset
