Summer Student (8 weeks in length)

Organizational Background
Durham Christian Homes is a charitable, not for profit organization dedicated to serving seniors. We own and operate two senior independent living buildings, as well as two long-term care homes.


Position Summary

Working within our senior independent living building, the Kitchen Helper will work alongside our Cook and be responsible for assisting with all aspects of lunch preparation, along with occasional special events for residents at our Whitby sites.

Duties should be performed in a manner consistent with our Core Values while ensuring resident safety, including but not limited to the following:


Tasks and Responsibilities:

Under the guidance and direction of the Cook, duties and responsibilities for the Kitchen Helper would include:

• Assist with the preparation of nutritious and various meals on a weekly basis through the Meal Program.
• Assist with dining services, including setting of tables, serving lunch and clean up
• Assist with maintaining a clean and sanity kitchen in compliance with Public Health and Durham Christian Homes requirements
• Assist with catering for Special Events as requested and approved.
• Maintain professional and respectful communication with residents, staff and contractors.

Qualifications:

As this position has been made possible by the
Canada Summer Jobs Program through the Government of Canada, all applicants must meet the following conditions:

• Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period;
• Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or a person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
• Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada.
• Current enrollment or graduation from a culinary program preferred.

Duration, Hours of Work and Salary

This position has been approved based on thirty-five (35) hours per week for a maximum of eight (8) weeks with an hourly wage of $16.50.

Hours of work would be Monday to Friday from 6:30 am to 2:00 pm. Placement end date not to exceed September 2, 2023.
