    Ship Maintenance Lead

    This role is Hybrid Halifax.

    Position Summary

    The role of the Ship Maintenance Lead is to oversee the planning, execution and closeout of Work Period activities on assigned vessels. Responsible for the integrated schedule and worksite during structured work periods, the Ship Maintenance Lead manages and coordinates internal and external (Customer, Contractors (TSN)'s, strategic partners etc.) teams through all phases of the work period. The Ship Maintenance Lead directs and monitors all activities to completion while preparing and delivering regular work period reports relating to schedule progress, cost and risks. The Ship Maintenance Lead is responsible to ensure all work executed in the Work Period follows all worksite safety plans and procedures. The Ship Maintenance Lead is responsible to the Ship Maintenance Team Lead.

    Key Areas of Responsibility

    The Ship Maintenance Lead is responsible to:

    • Lead the work period project planning activities of preparing, organizing and validating to ensure successful transition from project planning through to project closure;
    • Execute, monitor and control each project until its completion:
    • Act as the primary point of contact for all stakeholders with respect to the maintenance execution function on the ships;
    • Supervising (planning, organizing, leading and controlling) the Thales personnel and subcontractors to achieve agreed outcomes within their delegated authorities and responsibilities;
    • Responsible for coordinating and conducting all required activities prior to the commencement of maintenance execution. This involves subcontractor kick off meetings, authorization of purchase requisitions and issue of purchase orders;
    • Oversee all maintenance execution activities for designated maintenance periods to ensure material readiness objectives for the platforms are being achieved;
    • Provide whole ship project management support to the Coastal Ship Maintenance Team Lead as required to meet the availability standard and to meet the Full Mission Capability under the awarded ISS Contract(s);
    • Manage the conduct of maintenance and /or Ad-Hoc tasking's during designated maintenance work periods within agreed scheduled time frames;

    • Comply with and ensure compliance of others to all relevant HS&E legislative requirements, policies, procedures and framework with the intent of preventing or minimizing accidental exposures to self, colleagues, visitors and/or the environment;
    • Promote Thales's Health, Safety and Environmental programs by demonstrating HS&E Leadership in a professional and supportive manner; and
    • Interact and work with management/employees to promote teamwork, by effectively communicating with all levels of staff via staff meetings, written communications and one-on-one communication.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Minimum 3-year technical program diploma in a marine technical field offered by a recognized technical institute or certified as a technologist by a recognized provincial, state, or federal (national) licensing body in a relevant field or certified body or certified as one the following technical trades of the Canadian Armed Forces:
    • Marine Technician RQ-PO1; or
    • Weapons Engineer Technician RQ-PO1; or
    • Legacy QL 7 Marine Engineer; or
    • Legacy QL 6B Marine Electrician; or
    • Legacy QL 6B Hull Technician; or
    • Legacy QL 6B Naval Electronics Technician; or
    • Legacy QL 6B Naval Weapons Technician.
    • Minimum of 8 years demonstrated technical professional work experience in the last 15 years, managing projects and teams preferably in the ship/dockyard and Naval environments.

    Technical/Specialized Knowledge:

    • Experience working within or leading In Service Support Projects advantageous.
    • Experience in the supervision of teams undertaking maintenance activities.
    • Strong computer literacy, with proven experience with Microsoft products especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint essential.
    • Experience interfacing between various internal/external stakeholders within a project with ability to balance multiple priorities.
    • Experience using Isherwood Management Information System.
    • Experience managing work periods on Minor Warship and Auxiliary Vessels.

    Language:

    • English

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience working within a defence environment with active defence force personnel is desirable.
    • Experience within procurement, project management or warehouse environments desirable.
    • Experience with the Defense Resource Management Information System (DRMIS), or comparable document management system is advantageous.
    • Accreditation as a Certified Practicing Project Manager or equivalent is advantageous.

    Skills and Abilities:

    • Strong computer literacy, with proven experience with Microsoft products especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint essential;
    • Strong organizational skills and ability to balance multiple priorities;
    • Experience within procurement, project management or warehouse environments highly desirable; and
    • Project experience interfacing between internal/external stakeholders.

    Technical/Specialized Knowledge:

    • Minimum of two years previous experience working within the Military or a Defence Contract or Project desirable;
    • Experience with the Defense Resource Management Information System (DRMIS), or comparable document management system is advantageous;
    • Experience working in SAP, or comparable Enterprise Resource Planning or Asset Management software is advantageous;
    • Previous experience in ship-refit and repair activities is advantageous.

    Physical Demands

    • Schedule: 40 hours per week
    • Physical Environment: Office or onboard Naval ships alongside in harbor, or at sea, Will be required to undertake inspections, including confined space entry, on naval ships involving bending and twisting.
    • Travel: Occasional domestic or international travel will be required, which will include access to government facilities and assets, including naval vessels
