About the Position:
Working as part of the GCMS team in the Instrumentation Department, the laboratory analyst is responsible for all aspects of laboratory analysis including production, time management, quality control and turnaround time.
- Analysis of semivolatile parameters using split/splitless GCFID and /or GCECD, and volatile parameters using Headspace GCFID; Acquisition and calculations are performed using ChromPerfect software;
- Daily tasks will include GC maintenance and basic troubleshooting;
- All AN1 associated duties;
- Extractions in the lab, as needed;
- Workscheduling for a particular instrument or analytical method includes the use of Webview;
- Prepare all required reagents, standards, reference materials, etc.;
- Carry out all required data processing (i.e. calculations, data review, data entry, archival, etc. including use of ALSTools and Seedpak);
- Perform all required quality control procedures;
- Carry out all required recordkeeping & documentation;
- Communicate with the Client Services staff as required;
- Conduct work following all required safety protocols;
- Deliver accurate results to our clients in a timely manner;
- Technical decision making for nonroutine, complex analyses or matrices;
- Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;
- Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;
- Other duties as assigned.
- Intermediate English communication skills required (auditory, verbal, written, and reading);
- Intermediate user of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), with confident computer skills;
- Organized, analytical, and process oriented;
- High attention to detail;
- Strong problem solving skills;
- Ability to handle pressure from high sample volumes and competing turnaround times;
- Work independently and as part of a team;
- Strong work ethic and willingness to take on varied tasks as required;
- Commitment to excellence and a clientfocused attitude.
- B.Sc. or Technical Diploma in Chemistry, or related discipline is required;
- 1 year organics extractions experience is preferred;
- Experience with GC is preferred.
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs./14 kg on a regular basis and carry for short distances;
- Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;
- Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks, gloves etc., when required;
- Ability to stand for a full shift;
- Ability to sit at a desk and do general office work, which includes periodic sedentary responsibilities;
- You may be exposed to unpleasant odours;
- Please note that ALS operates 24/7 and will require day, afternoon, and graveyard shift work including weekends.
