Water Treatment Technician


The Water Treatment Technician is held accountable by the Environmental Services Supervisor for ensuring maintenance and operation of water treatment processes, containment areas and equipment to allow for safe handling and transfer of off specification effluents for discharge to sanitary sewer; and for off-site transfer of hazardous materials.

In addition, they are required to be an active member of the Emergency Response Team (ERT).


RESPONSIBILITIES AND WORK PERFORMED:


  • Must follow safe work practices, know and comply with all regulations, report an injury or illness immediately, report unsafe acts and/or conditions and may participate in Joint Health and Safety Committees (JHSCs) in conjunction with Company policies and current government legislation.
  • Continuous monitoring of the water and waste water treatment systems which includes the acid/chemical transfer lines and concentrates.
  • Ensures the proper function of water purification systems and wastewater treatment systems in accordance with Municipal and KEI standards.
  • Must investigate off specification/out of parameter issues promptly and document findings and corrective action taken where appropriate.
  • Preventative maintenance of equipment as scheduled by the Preventative Maintenance program.
  • General maintenance of all water treatment equipment including repairs, plumbing, welding, and installation and removal.
  • Maintain accurate records on each system.
  • Housekeeping of all waste treatment areas and equipment.
  • Communicate information between shift technicians in verbal and written form.
  • Must be familiar with the function of all equipment and processes within the department.
  • Ensure proper storage of spent and/or treated materials.
  • Ensure safe handling and proper packaging for transport of wastes or recycled materials out of KEI.
  • Ensure proper completion of relevant paperwork for hazardous waste, and recycling shipments when required.
  • Ensure proper handling and transfers in a safe and effective manner of solutions for treatment according to departmental procedures.
  • Implementation of corrective action based on observations and knowledge.
  • Provide technical assistance and support to production.
  • Deal with outside contractors and suppliers.
  • Working knowledge of the requirements as outlined in the environmental management system.
  • Required to supervise crews during shut downs and temporary employees on an as needed basis.
  • Assist in trouble shooting power plant equipment (boilers, chillers, and cooling towers) when required.
  • May be asked to perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Minimum completion of Grade 12 education; a completed college diploma in a chemistry related program or a minimum of 1 year work experience in waste/water treatment field preferred.
  • 4th Class Power Engineering certificate preferred.
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods training or ability to obtain.
  • First Aid Certificate or ability to obtain.
  • Licensed lift truck, scissor lift and golf cart operator or ability to obtain.
  • Proactive, self starter.
  • Ability to work well independently and as a part of a team.
  • Good communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Must be observant and have an eye for detail.
  • Understanding of PLC's and the programming language preferred.
  • Must have troubleshooting and problem solving skills
  • Understanding of operation and service requirements of electronic control and monitoring equipment preferred.
  • Computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, etc).
