Position Overview


As a member of the PTS team, you will utilize your skills by providing advanced technical desktop and network connectivity support to optimize client productivity, up-time and problem resolution.

Working with users, PTS staff and external resources, the PC/Network Support Specialist must be proficient in the use of a variety of information technology tools and products to support the desktop hardware and software solutions.


Main Accountabilities
General support and administrations of desktop hardware and software resources, both stand alone and networked, including needs assessment, installation, configuration and optimization of:

  • desktop/microcomputer operating software
- network drivers, etc. For network connectivity of workstations, printers, shared storage devices and access for these resources to various networked resources


  • Problem resolution of microcomputer hardware, software and network connectivity problems by responding to user calls, making preliminary assessments of the problems, taking corrective action and/or consulting with the Network Administrator or other PTS staff and/or arranging outside technical assistance where necessary.
  • Backup and supplementary resource of Network Administrator in the areas of general Novell client administration, e.g. password changes, adds/changes to user profiles, access rights modifications etc.
  • Participate in and/or lead special assignments or projects pertaining to client/desktop hardware or software that may involve other departmental staff in the installation, testing, and optimization of new technology solutions for client/desktop resources.
  • Perform routine duties to support effective, secure, day to day backup and recovery of the desktop and network resources, such as verification of backups, file restores, disaster recovery procedures etc.
  • Maintain detailed desktop hardware and software inventory records and provide input into the disaster recovery plan.
  • Liaise with the appropriate PTS and Human Resources staff in the identification of user education and training requirements, recommending suitable training programs and identifying users requiring training.
  • Maintain an advanced awareness of technological developments and advancements to make informed decisions and recommendations in the acquisition of microcomputer products and services.
  • Responsible for personal safety and the safety of others that is dependent upon their actions. Report hazards and unsafe acts or conditions encountered on the job to fellow workers and supervisors
  • Other duties as assigned.

Academic and professional qualifications:


Post secondary degree or diploma in Information Systems or Computer Science or the equivalent combination of education and work experience.


Experience:

Two years related microcomputer support experience


Skills (Technical):


  • Demonstrated experience in the installation, configuration and optimization of desktop software in a Windows/Novell NetWare environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in the problem diagnosis, repair and upgrading of microcomputer hardware at the component level.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks within schedules that have changing priorities.
  • Excellent time management and English communication skills (both oral and written).
  • Demonstrated good attendance record.
  • A valid Class G driver's license with a good driving record. Demonstrated commitment to safety with high ethical and quality standards
  • Demonstrated excellent English written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent attendance record.
  • Valid Class "G" driver's licence with a clean driver's abstract & access to a vehicle.
