The Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society (VAFCS) is a non-profit charitable organization serving the Urban Aboriginal community with a mandate to provide programs and services that will contribute to the cultural, educational, social, economic, and recreational development of Urban Aboriginal people.

The Society manages twenty-three programs and services through three locations in Vancouver.

The Friendship Centre at 1607 East Hastings is a community-led organization creating meaningful change for the Urban Aboriginal Population that we serve.

VAFCS is currently seeking an individual connected with Indigenous community, highly organized, and self-motivated to work with us

Program Summary

The VAFCS is seeking Summer Student Worker applicants to fill a contract of 35 hours per week.

  • Completing organized preemployment training (e.g. Leadership, Food Safe, Team management, First Aid)
  • Taking direction and mentorship from the Program Supervisor or Director as necessary
  • Providing outreach assistance for our essential services including food delivery for our Elders & Children programs and assisting with cultural outreach
  • Create documents and data entry to assist Program Supervisor or Director
  • Building strong team cohesion and positive work environment for staff, children and families.
  • Being willing and open to develop professional and softskill competences
  • Being accountable and reliable (i.e. punctual, committed for full term of employment contract)
  • Working with VAFCS staff to provide assistance to ensure services run smoothly
  • Acting as an Ambassador for VAFCS
  • Ensuring all food hampers are made and delivered to in need families
This position is accountable to the Program Director or designate. This job posting is in conjunction to an employment-driven initiative, aimed to train and employ Aboriginal youth.

Therefore, in order to be considered for the position, you must be Aboriginal (Status or Non-Status First Nations, Inuit, or Métis).

You must be returning to full time studies on completion of this employment contract.


Abilities:

  • Interest and experience working in social services or nonprofit organization
  • At least 6 months experience in leading a team of at least 12 individuals
  • Experience working with Aboriginal children and youth or marginalized populations.
  • Ability to plan, lead, report on activities (experience an asset).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be organized and detailoriented with an ability to work in a fastpaced environment.
  • Ability to work as part of a team, but also take leadership role
  • Responsible role model for children

Qualifications:


  • Previously enrolled in secondary or postsecondary school
  • Returning to secondary or postsecondary school
  • Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Compliance with VAFCS COVID19 Vaccination Policy
  • A valid Class 4 Driver Licence is an asset for this position.

Wage:
Minimum wage - $15.65 / hour

Hours: 35 hours / week
