Position reports to:
Shelter Director, Oshki Kizis Lodge
Location:
Oshki Kizis Lodge
Start Date:
Immediately
Hours of Work: 35 hrs/week
Work Conditions:
Located in a shelter setting; medium - high risk environment
Salary:
To commence with experience
Summary:
The Indigenous Cultural Outreach Worker is responsible for assisting with development and
implementation of program delivery. A respect for all teaching of all Aboriginal Nations is
required for this position, regardless of personal teachings. A further requirement of this position
is to work towards empowering all clients to seek out and respect their own teachings (regardless
of their Nation, gender, religion, or sexual preference).
Responsibilities:
- Planning, preparation of cultural program
- Purchase program supplies within budget guidelines
- Liaise and communicate with Princeton (Cornerstone) staff and residents about program
- Keep and compile statistics
- Promotion of the Culture Program
- Set up, takedown and cleanup of program room
- Coordination of workshop topics and presenters
- Administrative and financial duties as required
Qualifications
- Understanding of Traditional culture and practices**
- Has a good understanding of cultural competency; with the ability to be culturally sensitive
- Has excellent oral and written communication
- Has the ability to work effectively as part of a team and interact with workers from a variety
- Has the ability to work independently with a strong sense of focus, taskoriented,
- Has the ability to work independently with mínimal day to day supervision
- Functional knowledge of the Indigenous and nonAboriginal service system of Ottawa
- Has a strong sense of confidentiality and respect involving both clients and fellow employees
- Commitment to feminist practice and working in close collaboration with team members,
Requirements:
- Some evening and weekend work required**
- Computer skills and literacy
- Criminal reference check required
- First Nations; Inuit or Metis descent preferred
- Current First Aid and CPR
