Contract up to 4 months
Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system.

We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto's subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster, and easier.

Our Rail Business Strategy & Operations Control Office is looking for a CO-OP Student to assist with the development of business process improvements, automation, reporting and data analysis.

The CO-OP Students will work with internal stakeholders to provide analytical support in the completion of required tasks and deliverables.


What will I be doing?

  • Analyzing and organizing raw data from different sources; determine data requirements; gather, understand, clean and process data for the modeling purposes.
  • Hands on creation of analytical models, validation, testing and integrated reconciliations
  • Using statistical practices, analyze current and historical data to make predictions, identify risks and opportunities, enabling better decisions on planned/future events
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across Rail Services to gather, input, organize, and interpret data for reports/presentations/meetings/projects
  • Develops data visualizations, dashboards, spreadsheets, forms, and databases to input, track, store and retrieve data
  • Transforming data to be presented in models, charts, and tables into a format that is useful to the business
  • Perform assigned technical/professional/administrative duties
  • Prepare agendas, coordinate, and participate in technical/operational meetings
  • Certain travel and/or field work may occasionally be required

What Skills and Experience Do I Need?

  • Must be attending school fulltime and returning to an academic institution
  • Must be at least 15 years of age before starting employment
  • Enrolled in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering at a postsecondary institution
  • Interest in rail transportation and transit/operational data modeling is a strong asset
  • Familiar with data interpretation, qualitative and quantitative analysis
  • Familiar with models, datasets, business/technical requirements, and statistical programming languages (such as Python, SQL, Java, Scala, DAX in PowerBI, etc.)
  • Previous experience working within a business environment is preferred
  • Strong written, oral communication and interpersonal skills are required
  • Competence in software such as Microsoft Suite, PowerBI, and Data Visualization Systems
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Ability to cooperate and assist other coworkers with various projects
  • A willingness to learn while being exposed to all aspects of Rail Business Strategy & Operations Control
