The Manager of North Simcoe Youth Wellness Hub is currently seeking an Employment Specialist.

The purpose of the position is to provide individualized, intensive vocational and educational supports and services to help youth with mental health concerns find and maintain meaningful competitive employment / education training.


The incumbent must demonstrate the professional ability to build working relationships with employers, educational institutions and other relevant community partners to develop an employment network, decrease mental health stigma and provide education regarding psychological health and safety in the workplace.

Services are delivered using the Individual Placement and Support Model, an evidence based best practice, client centered, strength based approach.

This position offers a hybrid work environment consisting of in-office and remote work.


Key Accountabilities:

Vocational / educational Support to Youth and Employers / Educational Institutions:

  • Provide support to youth using the eight principles of the Individual Placement and Support model
  • Assist individuals with mental health concerns to identify viable work / education options and assess employment / education readiness
  • Plan courses of action as a result of assessments evaluations, consideration of youths' physical tolerances, impact of mental health on employability / education participation
  • Recommend, develop and implement employment / education plans, including service coordination as required and provide preemployment services i.e. resume development, interview coaching
  • Assist individuals to prepare for and find meaningful and competitive employment / education attainment and provide job development, intensive job retention support, and job / education crisis support
  • Advocate and negotiate on behalf of youth, when necessary
  • Develop partnerships with community employers, employment related resources and /educational resources to; create awareness of service; facilitate paid/unpaid employment/education opportunities including preparation and ongoing supports; provide education on mental health and employment/education
  • Facilitate referrals to identified community resources
  • Develop accommodation plans
  • Understand and provide Labour Market Information to job seekers to direct their employment search
  • Participate in community outreach activities through the development of collaborative partnerships
  • Actively participate in Employment Specialist meetings related to professional practice.
  • Maintain all electronic Client records
  • Contribute to a safe, therapeutic environment at all times through awareness of prograM/Facility wide policies and procedures and mandatory training, implementing practices related to patient safety, reporting of issues in Spirit, utilizing safe practices to address patients using recovery principles and trauma informed care in a culture of least restraint.
  • Performs all work at all times in compliance with all hospital policies and procedures and legislation (Occupational Health &Safety Act, Fire Code, WHMIS, etc.) relevant to health and safety, security (including relational/therapeutic security) and potential risk hazards, and in particular, "duties of the worker" as defined in Section 28 of the OH&S Act.

Requirements/Qualifications:


  • Post-Secondary Education in Social Services or relevant Rehabilitation or Vocational field
  • Minimum of one year related experience in employment field is preferred
  • Valid "Class G" Driver's License in good standing
  • Preference for Formal Training or Education in: Labour Market Information, Job Development, Employment Counselling
  • Preference for recent and related experience within a mental health facility
  • Knowledge of mental health legislation to ensure youth rights & confidentiality, career development theory and uptodate career development practices
  • Demonstrated knowledge of mental illness, manifestations of the illness, understanding of the impact of employment rehabilitation in mental health recovery
  • Demonstrated experience with principles and practices of rehabilitation and recovery
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with local labour market information, development of simulated skills training and integrated employment opportunities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Community employment services, local labour market information, the business community, funding opportunities and impact of social
