Job Title:
Youth Intervention Worker (YIW)

Salary:
$55,000- $59,000


Contact Period:
May 1st March 31st 2025 (with the possibility of extension)


Position summary:

This position provides community-based support and services for those between the ages of 1- 17 and their families that are at risk of being involved in the legal system and/or impacted by
community violence. The Youth Intervention Worker (YIW) strives to build resilience and skills
to meet educational, employment and personal goals, and find proactive solutions to solve the
problems of youth violence in neighborhoods and families.


Reports to:
Manager of BGC Albion


Roles and Responsibilities:


  • YIW will work with participants referred through Justice Centres (inc probation officer)
and local and program partners

  • YIW will ensure culturally specific, curriculumbased programming and mobile services
that engage family, teachers, religious leaders etc

  • YIW will review needs assessment and workplan from the Caseworker with the
participant, and jointly work to meet identified needs and legal obligations.

  • Where the YIW is supporting a participant's family member, a needs assessment and workplan may have to be conducted for them or the family.
  • YIW will provide warm referrals to resources or other services per the participants needs
and interests (ie. music, recreational, arts based, mental health counselling, job training,
educational support, and drug misuse counselling) and support advancement through
these.

  • YIW may act as a mentor or refer to a mentor, conveying a message of rejecting the use
of violence, and provide guidance, education, and advocacy to help youth navigate
challenges and make positive life choices.

  • YIW will collaborate with community partners, social services, schools, and other
resources to create a comprehensive support network for participants.

  • YIW will organize and facilitate community engagement activities to increase youth and
their family's legal capacity.

  • YIW will coordinate with caseworkers to conduct participant progress evaluations to
track development and program effectiveness.

  • Other duties as assigned.
**Key Assets: - Having a good understanding of cultural competencies and intersectional issues that
impact the lives of the client and their families.

  • To liaise with client families and significant others as appropriate.
  • Knowledge of the structure and procedures of the Criminal Justice System, including
Canadian criminal procedures, Criminal Code of Canada, and related court decision
regarding Afro-Caribbean persons.

  • Knowledge of African-Caribbean culture and experience working with African-Caribbean persons; understanding the cultural complexities and environmental factors.
  • Understanding of antioppressive and antiblack racism theory.
  • Delivery of culturally specific programming to African-Caribbean youth group and
individual counselling.

  • Selfmotivated individual with the ability to work with mínimal supervision in a teamoriented setting.
  • Must possess strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Manage a caseload youth in our program as assigned and ensure that each person is
moving along the process of change.

  • Conduct assessments on participants and complete service plan with jointly establish
goals.

  • Maintain detailed records for ever interaction with and about the youth and ensure that
call online documentation and records are updated.

  • Work closely with program coordinator on the progress or concerns with your client.
  • Conduct weekly psychoeducational one on one or group session as assigned in the
community or in school setting.

  • Engaged each youth in caseload throughout the week through individual counselling
sessions, telephone calls, school visits, court advocacy, or other community outings and
ongoing support.

  • Conduct outreach to the community (individually and as a team member) to build strong
relationships with youth, residents, business, and community groups.


Qualifications:

Demonstrate an understanding of the challenges facing youth and exhibits a rational empathetic
attitude towards youth considering a variety of underlying issues, such as low socioeconomic
status, presence of gangs in the neighbourhood, availability of drugs and firearms in the
neighbourhood, feeling unsafe in neighbourhood; high crime, conflict with social isolation,
family disorganization, school problem and institutional racism.

  • Minimum of a Social Service Worker Diploma, Youth and Child Worker BSW (Bachelor
of Social Work Degree).

  • One year of prior counselling experience and developing and facilitation educational
workshop material (one on one or groups).

  • Previous experience working with "at risk", most vulnerable youths using strengthbased
youth development model.

  • Excellent interpersonal social skills, including the ability to work in a group
