  • This position will report directly to the manager of EAST operations and will be responsible for working in cooperation with multiple other works supervisors in directing unionized staff engaged in right of way maintenance ranging from asphalt operations, road shouldering and washout repair, sidewalk maintenance, litter mitigation, and response to extreme weather events. This position will also play an integral role in the winter works program with a focus on the downtown core.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • The IMO Supervisors are charged with a wide variety of work assignments throughout the year. The work is best explained as seasonal, covering a large geographic area.
  • During the winter works season, Supervisors will participate in winter works operations, as such, much of the work is weather dependent, Supervisors must maintain a high degree of flexibility in their work schedule.
  • They have a wide range of experience and knowledge on all aspects of public works, together with the versatility to fill in for Supervisors in other Municipal Operations divisions.
  • Supervisors are required to take part in IMO duty week assignments.
  • During these duty weeks they are on call after normal working hours to deal with emergency situations, e.g., oil spills, accident cleanup, etc. using their knowledge and experience to call in the right staff and equipment to do the job.
  • During winter operations, Work Supervisors are on call 12 hours/day to support and participate in the Winter Works program.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:


  • Minimum Grade 12 with additional related formal experience/training
  • CET designation or equivalent experience/training/designation/certificate
  • Three (3) years of demonstrated leadership experience in municipal maintenance operations in a supervisory role or an equivalent and comparable measure of experience elsewhere
  • Experience with construction plans and build projects
  • Training and experience in human resource management, budget management, collective agreements and project management
  • Must possess a valid CLASS 3 N.S. Driver's License or be willing to obtain, with a responsible driving record

Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Strong working knowledge of work processes and equipment operation for assigned works programs and winter works operations required
  • Knowledge of HRM relevant software, i.e., CityWorks, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, GIS etc.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of occupational safety and environmental regulations and practices
  • Knowledge of applicable collective agreements within HRM or equivalent relevant experience
  • Demonstrated labour relation skills in managing a unionized workforce
  • Strong working knowledge of WHMIS required

WORK STATUS: Permanent, full time

HOURS OF WORK: Monday to Friday, 7:00am-3:00pm for 40 hours per week. This position also takes part in the winter works program and will be required to work shift work during that program.

SALARY: Non-Union Level NU5 Salary will be commensurate with experience.
