FACILITY/DEPARTMENT:
Charleswood Adult Day Program


PERMANENT PART TIME/ 64 HOURS BI-WEEKLY - Tuesday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m.

4:30p.m.


PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Under the supervision of the Recreation Manager/Coordinator, assists with professional duties consisting of, but not limited to planning, developing, coordinating, implementing, and all daily routine activities related to the delivery of the day program.


Maintain the role of the assistant to the Recreation Coordinator in planning, organizing, developing, enforcing rules, evaluating recreation, fitness, and overseeing day to day operations of the facility.

To provide personal assistance to participants as necessary, and perform program tasks accordingly and in a professional manner.


Required to actively participate in all programming and assume leadership through facilitation of programming when the Recreation Coordinator is occupied or away.


Maintains a high standard of program delivery in a manner consistent with the organization's aims and objectives, and in keeping with advances in current gerontological thinking.


Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and work together in order to develop team dynamics and group cohesiveness.

Job Requirements:


  • Bachelor of Recreation Studies, Recreation Facilitator for Older Adults certificate, Food Handlers Certificate or a combination of related education and experience.
  • Maintain the established recreation, social, and specialized programs, promoting group interaction, participation, cognitive stimulation, individual accomplishment, and enjoyment of purposeful activities.
  • Take initiative to assist with the planning and implementation of social, cognitive and recreation programs in accordance with the capabilities of each participant and the group as a whole.
  • Research program resources.
  • Facilitate and lead activity programs.
  • Exhibit creativity and resourcefulness in adapting existing program resources, and design programs that address the capabilities of group demographics.
  • Assist with implementation of fitness program, and assume leadership as required.
  • Plan special events in consultation with the Recreation Coordinator and the Recreation Manager.
  • Communicate new ideas, suggestions and recommendations regarding program planning and individual participant program objectives;
  • Assist participants upon arrival, departure, and during the day as necessary;
  • Prepare and clean up of program area prior to arrival and after participants leave;
  • Participate with the group during all programming;
  • Provide appropriate assistance to participants with physical or cognitive limitations, being sensitive to their selfworth and dignity;
  • Maintain all equipment and materials, checking safety of equipment used;
  • Take out morning snack and put in oven warmer.
  • Wipe down tables with both cleaner and sanitizers if required.
  • Set tables for morning coffee with appropriate napkins, spoons, and cream/sugar, garbage cans, mugs.
  • Set lunchtime tables with placemats, cutlery, etc. being cognizant of group dynamics.
  • Prepare coffee, tea, fill water pitchers and ensure sufficient juice is prepared for daily use.
  • Assist with clean up; load and start dishwasher if required.

Knowledge:


  • Understanding the aging process.
  • Awareness of community resources.
  • Understanding of group process.
  • Ability to develop, plan and implement programs to the cognitively impaired seniors.
  • Good communication skills, written and oral.
  • Creativity and resourcefulness.
  • Ability to relate to and be sensitive to cognitive impairment;
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team setting.
  • Ability to be physically active throughout the day.
