JOB DESCRIPTION

Duties:


  • Reporting to the Director of Distribution Asset Planning, the Technical Strategic Principal will lead
- a small team and be responsible for:

  • Demonstrate safety leadership in distribution system planning through Safety by Design/Safety
by Planning and act as champion to foster and enhance the safety considerations in distribution
- plans.
  • Provide contributions in planning expertise and experience in the development of the distribution
system vision, long term strategies, and distribution plans.- Considers and weighs the impacts of technology, safety, operability, and integrity of the system

with stakeholder needs and expectations, financial impacts, consistent with the long-term BC

  • Hydro strategic goals and objectives.
  • Provide distribution technical input and historical knowledge to the development of the
distribution load forecast ensuring distribution system capacity and flexibility to meet projected
- customer demand and manage BC Hydro risks related to unpredictable spot loads.
  • Strategize the adoption of new distribution technologies such as energy storage, automated
demand response controls of customer equipment, and distributed generation.- Ability to understand customer requirements and needs for electrification and provide cost

effective solutions.- Lead development of the 10-year distribution system capital plan and supports, initiates, justifies,

and prioritizes the capital projects to meet long term goals and stakeholder expectations.- Collaborate with Asset Planning, Interconnections, Distribution Engineering, Distribution Design,

  • Portfolio Optimization Management, Finance, Field Operations, Project Delivery and Program &
  • Contract Management to manage resolution of planning related issues, facilitate efficient and
- effective execution and coordination of the distribution capital plans and programs.
  • Provide expertise to support development and updates of distribution system planning criteria.
  • Act as an authority on distribution system planning and leads or participates on external
technical committees.- Represent BC Hydro at meetings with stakeholders including various levels of government,

community agencies, and the public regarding significant or high impact planning issues.- Plan, manage, and control, through professional staff and consultants, the strategic direction and

ongoing operation of the distribution system planning function and prepare and manage business
- plans and operating budgets.
  • Lead Distribution Planners through improvements to Distribution Planning processes and
workload and ensure an inclusive and respectful environment in the workplace.- Act as an expert and coach others in developing skills required to plan a smart distribution grid

for the future. Support Distribution Planners in growing and developing skills for current and future
- roles,
  • Mentor senior and specialist planning engineers while reviewing and improving planning studies
and proposed plans for Distribution System Improvement


Qualifications:

***- University Degree in electrical engineering or other related discipline. An advanced degree

(masters or doctorate) is preferred.- Minimum of 15 years of experience, with strong technical knowledge of utility distribution system

planning, distribution standards and design processes.- Registered, or immediately eligible for registration, as a Professional Engineer with Engineering

and Geoscientists of BC (EGBC)

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interface and manage issues with others both internal to BC
Hydro and external groups including government, municipalities, local communities, First Nations,
- other stakeholders, and regulators.
  • Proven leadership ability.
  • Proven ability to think independently, strategically, and laterally, to highlight improvement
opportunities, and drive change.- Exceptional program / project management capabilities, to develop and adhere to aggressive

timelines, including a high degree of flexibility to adapt to sometimes rapidly changing business
