Junior or Intermediate Air and Water Quality Engineer or Scientist: Sarnia

ORTECH's Sarnia office has been providing air and water quality monitoring and consulting services to local industry for over 60 years.

ORTECH is looking for a qualified individual interested and ready for a rewarding challenge to enhance its team based out of Sarnia, Ontario.

The position is expected to involve both working on environmental compliance and permitting projects while also helping with water and air sampling and monitoring projects.

Starting salary will be commensurate with education and experience; and expected to range from $ $26.50 per hour plus additional compensation for participating in the on-call rotation and overtime work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Calculate airborne emissions from a variety of industrial based activities using engineering calculations, best practices or published emission factors;
• Prepare airemission inventories;
• Organize and interpret data from monitoring sites;
• Perform computerbased air dispersion modelling and compare results to provincial legislation;
• Review air quality aspects of environmental assessments;
• Plan and coordinate technical and administrative aspects of assigned projects;
• Communicate (written and verbal) with regulatory agencies, clients, and other stakeholders;
• Write technical reports to present the methods, results and recommendations;
• Manage data/information and track issues;
• Facilitate the acquisition of data ensuring QA/QC procedures are followed;
• Work to strict schedules and project milestones while delivering high quality results;
• Collect air and water samples from field locations in accordance with ORTECH standard operating procedures (SOPs);
• Assist in the operation and maintenance of online analytical equipment; and
• Follow ORTECH and client specific health, safety and other policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Mandatory Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in environmental science (chemistry, meteorology, physics) or engineering science (Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering) or related field (Post Secondary degree in related field as a minimum);
• Excellent computer and analytical skills (use of MS Office suite and other database tools);
• Strong aptitude for problem solving and proven ability to meet deadlines;
• Equally comfortable working independently and as part of a team;
• Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously;
• Attention for detail to ensure a high degree of quality assurance and quality control;
• Ability to follow written procedures;
• A valid driver's license with a good driving record as position may require some travel;
• Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing approximately 50 lbs and be comfortable handling compressed gas cylinders, including loading K sized gas cylinders into pickup truck beds;
• Ability to traverse rough terrain to access sampling points including ascending and descending slopes while carrying equipment; and,
• Willingness to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions including rain and snow and/or during nighttime hours provided it is safe to do so.

Additional Qualifications / Attributes that are Highly Desirable:

• Experience and knowledge in conducting air quality assessments;
• Knowledge of the Ontario (and Canadian) Environment Protection Act and related air quality regulations;
• Understanding of other relevant Ontario legislations and policies;
• Understanding of electronic instrumentation, environmental sample collection and laboratory analysis techniques, particularly gas chromatography;
• Familiarity with industrial and manufacturing processes;
• Knowledge of GIS and AutoCad, air dispersion modeling, emission inventories, environmental permitting;
• Experience or knowledge of ambient air monitoring methods and equipment;
• Experience or knowledge of collection of environmental water samples;
• Experience with project management;
• Excellent written and oral communication skills;
• Motivated;
• Ability to work with mínimal supervision and as part of a team; and
• Strong organizational and people skills.

Related experience is an asset but not required.
