Responsibilities

Development and Planning of Pedagogical Activities

  • Develops, organizes and animates pedagogical, cultural, recreational, and sporting activities aimed at developing skills in the social, cognitive, psychomotor, communication and other domains;

1)
Individualized Education Plan (IEP)

  • Collaborates in the development and drafting of the IEP;
  • Assesses the students' emotional, behavioural, and social learning level, as required by the teacher;
  • Implements techniques and strategies stipulated in the IEP.

2)
Individualized Pedagogical Program (IPP)

  • Collaborates in the development and drafting of the IPP;
  • Assists in selecting the measures for working on and assessing the learning elements stipulated in the IPP.

3)
Active Prevention Plan (Behaviour)

  • Develops the Active Prevention Plan with the behaviour management team.

Student Agenda

  • Records observations and interventions in the student's agenda.

Student Support

  • Helps the student participate in school related activities (stimulation) according to the recommendations of the various parties (teachers, therapists, specialists, etc.);
  • Provides the student with optimal conditions conducive to learning;
  • Contributes to the development of the student's autonomy, sense of responsibility, interpersonal relations and sense of belonging to the school;
  • Provides the student, with a favourable environment for the development of healthy lifestyle habits and skills that positively influence their health and wellbeing;
  • Intervenes with students reactions to their environment, provides them with a helping hand, supports them in the process of regulating and modifying their behaviour, etc.;
  • Imparts basic knowledge about cleanliness, dressing, drinking, and eating habits; helps students wash, dress, and eat their snack or meal as needed;
  • Provides students with the necessary help for toileting, and for maintaining an acceptable standard of personal hygiene;
  • Helps the student understand and adhere to the Giant Steps School rules and code of conduct;
  • Always ensures the supervision and safety of students.

Student's Behavioural Situation

Support for Educational Activities

  • Plans and prepares materials, visuals and other activities and adapts/modifies them according to the teacher's specifications;
  • Washes, stores and if necessary, disinfects materials used during student activities;
  • Whenever possible, attends student support team meetings.

Training

  • Remains at the forefront of knowledge in the field of special education and autism by participating, among other things, in the training offered by the Resource and Training Centre.

Health and Safety

  • Documents all incidents and/or accidents experienced by a student or an employee that has occurred in their presence and collaborates with the Code White Team to reestablish order and to complete the required paperwork;
  • Respects and applies the philosophy and intervention techniques taught by CPI (which can help restore calmness and reestablish order);
  • Participates in student supervision during lunch, recess, in play areas inside and outside of the school, and during outings (pool, skating, etc.).

Other Tasks:


  • Supervises Cegep students as needed;
  • Executes all other related tasks requested by the administration.

Qualifications

  • Possess a College Diploma (DEC), an Attestation of Collegial Studies (ACS) in Special Care Counselling, or a bachelor's degree in a related field (i.e., Education, Psychology, Psychoeducation, etc.);
  • Experience in a school setting is an asset;
  • Demonstrate a real interest in persons with an ASD;
  • Very good interpersonal skills with students, parents, colleagues, and supervisors;
  • Ability to work in a team;
  • Ability to write concise reports in a rigorous manner;
  • Willingness to work with any student or any age group, and in any classroom;
  • Spoken and written English or French (bilingualism is an asset)
