One-year term position starting as soon as possible

Monday to Friday, occasional weekend work or evening work may be required


Wetaskiwin and District Victim Services is police-based and provides information and referrals to victims of crime from within the Wetaskiwin and Maskacis Victim Services offices.

The primary location for this position is Wetaskiwin however, occasional travel to Maskwacis might be necessary.


The position of the Indigenous Outreach Specialist requires a self-motivated individual to provide dedicated, culturally appropriate, trauma-informed and victim centered victim services to victims of crime.

The IVO Specialist would provide a key link and liaison function between Indigenous victims of crime, the Wetaskiwin Victim Service Unit and other agencies including the criminal justice system.


Responsibilities of this position will focus on providing targeted services to ensure that Indigenous victims of crime can access their rights as victims as outlined in both the Canadian Victims Bill of Rights and the Alberta Victims of Crime Act.

Key to this service is the building and maintaining of relationships, including the primary one with the victim that may require a facilitated referral approach.

Relationships with the community agencies/stakeholders are also a significant service target with the goal of providing consistent, culturally safe response to all victims of crime.


Qualifications/Skills Required:

  • MUST have a valid driver's license, be 18 years of age and a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident (landed immigrant).
  • Previous experience working within the legal system, victim services or law enforcement would be an asset.
  • Postsecondary education in the human services field or equivalent related experience and education.
  • Working knowledge of trauma informed care and program delivery and understanding ambiguous loss and culturally safe program delivery is a must.
  • Must have an understanding of crisis intervention strategies, group dynamics, diverse populations and must be able to manage crisis in a high needs environment.
  • Must be willing to work flexible schedules to accommodate client needs and events.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must be able to work with minimum supervision as well as in a team environment.
  • Must be proficient in the use of various computer programs, working knowledge with the VCSM program would be an asset.
  • Must be detail oriented and able to multitask.
  • Must be able to work with the operational policies and procedures of Wetaskiwin and District Victim Services.
The IVSO position will be required to complete the following training within the first three months of service:

  • Solicitor General Advocate Training Certification
Other training opportunities will be provided to the IVOS throughout the year and as they become available.
