The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario is looking for a Judge to work as part of a panel of Judges in officiating horse racing at the racetracks and enforcing the rules of racing.


Reporting to the Manager of Racing, the Judge/s will ensure all rules and regulations under the Horse Racing Licensing Act and the Rules of Racing are observed.

The incumbent/s will be required to make decisions and rulings in conjunction with the other Judges based upon a majority decision to control the conduct of racing, racing officials, owners, trainers, drivers, and other persons connected with the care and control of horses.


Judges are required to travel within the province and work hours consistent with the horse racing schedule, which includes evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays.


  • Keep the Senior Judge and the other Judges fully informed at all times.
  • Participate in investigations and Judges' reviews into alleged violations of the rules, as required.
  • Make recommendations concerning improvements to procedures.
  • Participate in Horse Racing Appeal Panel (HRAP) hearings, as required.
  • Make decisions and rulings and assess penalties.
  • Ensure the completion of the daily report form, the daily race program, and the official chart of the races, jointly with the Senior Judge and the other Judges.
  • Assume the responsibilities, rights, and authorities common to all Standardbred Judges.
  • Supervise the running of a qualifying race.
  • Work with the Central Adjudication Room (CAR) at Head Office; provide information to and receive guidance from the CAR.
  • Multiple years of experience in racing, management, or officiating.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Standardbred Rules of Racing.
  • Sufficient knowledge of legal procedures to conduct fair and judicial hearings.
  • Completion of the exam at Standardbred Canada to become accredited to be hired as a Judge is an asset.
  • Completion of a 2week Racing Commission International (RCI) Accreditation course in the U.S. is an asset.
  • A good knowledge of horsemanship and an understanding of the training and care of racehorses.
  • Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's Licence free of offenses under the Highway Traffic Act.
