    Position Details

    The Art Gallery at the University of Lethbridge is looking for a casual Indigenous Curatorial Assistant (Administrative Support I) to start as soon as possible.

    The duties and responsibilities are commensurate with a Research Assistant for a project (or several projects). Specific daily and weekly tasks will be directed by the priority list below:

  • Become proficient in the use of the Gallery's TMS Collections database.
  • Become familiar with the U of L Art Collection's holding of Indigenous artworks and Artist Files, including 2D and 3D works.
  • Be trained and become proficient with standard museum practices and procedures for handling artworks; then, supported by Elders and working with the Gallery staff, assist with developing procedures to revise the UofL Art Gallery's practices to implement Blackfoot and wider Indigenous protocols for handling and engaging with artworks and cultural material.
  • Document Indigenous artworks in the Collection through condition reports and/or photography, together with Gallery Staff and the Mootookakio'ssin team, in connection with the Blackfoot Digital Library (BDL). Assist with development of content on the BDL related to these items.
  • Research and compile Indigenous Art Policies from other Canadian agencies and institutions – including and especially land-based public artworks.
  • Assist with an initial site and condition survey of the Blackfoot Confederacy Circle installation in the campus common grounds, including meeting with the Artist and Blackfoot Elders, as well as following standard museum procedures such as measurements, photography and documentation. Assist in developing plans for policy to support acquisition of this artwork and the future creation of Indigenous public-site artworks.
  • Participate in Mootookakio'ssin planning and project meetings in association with UK and European research partners and the Blackfoot Digital Library (BDL).
  • Meet weekly with the cohort of summer student employees working with the U of L Art Gallery and the BDL. This will include trips to Blackfoot reserves to meet with community and Elders.
  • Contribute to the UofL Art Gallery's plans for future Indigenous exhibitions and public programs.
  • Hourly salary: $23.96 per hour Position Qualifications The successful candidate will be a post-secondary undergraduate or graduate student, or recent graduate, with coursework in relevant research areas, including: Indigenous Studies, Art History and Museum Studies, History, Archaeology, Anthropology and/or Cultural studies.

    The successful candidate will also be able to demonstrate:
  • familiarity with Blackfoot knowledge & protocols
  • archival research experience
  • excellent communication and writing skills
  • strong relationship building skills
  • ability to work independently
  • A valid unrestricted Class 5 Driver's License with no more than 6 demerits and submission of a motor vehicle record (driver abstract) dated within 3 months of the posting close is required.
