ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

SUMMARY
Founded in May of 2016, Virago Nation is an all-Indigenous burlesque collective of women/femme/two-spirit artists that seeks to reclaim Indigenous sexuality from the toxic effects of colonization by representing positive, diverse expressions of Indigenous sexuality on stage and through outreach programs and workshops.
Jennifer Hardwick since the Fall of 2018 to explore how Indigenous burlesque enacts Indigenous knowledges and experiences, builds relationships between communities, fosters awareness of historical and ongoing colonization, and promotes Indigenous peoples' (and Indigenous women's specifically) sovereign rights to their own bodies, sexualities, and gender identities.
In September 2023 the collaborative research team will begin a 2-year project funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) which will include a book project, performances, workshops, an open-access digital archive, and an art show.
This position will begin September 15, 2023 and end on April 15, 2023. The Research Assistant will work approximately 20 hours a month (5 hours a week) at the rate of $27/hour. Preference will be given to Indigenous, 2SLGBTQIA+, and/or disabled applicants. This position is only open to a current KPU student.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Locating, collating, and annotating key literature about Indigenous performance arts, with particular focuses on gender and sexuality, disability, and solidarity
- Coordinating events
- Collaboratively conducting interviews with Virago Nation members
- Writing and editing scholarly and nonscholarly texts
- Curating and editing digital materials such as videos, infographics, and eportfolios
QUALIFICATIONS
- Writing, editing, and/or design experience is an asset
- Research experience is an asset
- Familiarity with Indigenous protocols and research methodologies is an asset
