Job Summary
The Rail Grinding Supervisor is responsible for CN's Grinding Operations.

The role monitors the work of internal team members as well as contractors interacting with rail grinding trains, water trucks and fire suppression equipment.

The incumbent conducts pre-grinding surveys with local track forces and provides track protection for grinding operations. The position engages with multiple levels within the organization to ensure safe and efficient operation of grinding trains.


Main Responsibilities
Safety

  • Ensure continued protection of team members on and off tracks
  • Evaluate team performance and ensure compliance with CN and contractor policies and procedures
  • Evaluate, assess, and execute safety plans on a continual basis
  • Audit and assess work equipment, identify potential issues, and require remediation if needed
Daily Operations

  • Plan daily and shortterm work to be conducted
  • Communicate daily plan and work on shortterm plans for Area Supervisors
  • Communicate with Rail Traffic Controllers and plan daily activities
  • Plan and ensure protection of work groups according to daily dynamic working conditions
  • Ensure successful weekly handoff of machines and grinding plans
Ad Hoc Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Review daily work sheets to ensure alignment with CN and contractor policies and procedures
  • Approve invoicing to ensure compliance with CN's Accounting practices
  • Review and support work to continually improve policies, procedures, guidelines, and playbooks
  • Take on additional and growing tasks and responsibilities (e.g. ad hoc metrics)
Working Conditions


Requirements:

Experience


Railroad Maintenance

  • Minimum 1 year of railroad maintenance experience
  • Experience receiving and managing track authority
  • Experience in railroad operations, production gangs or construction
  • Ability to obtain multiple forms of Track Protection for grinding operations
  • Experience managing multiple priorities within demanding time constraints
  • Experience adapting to rapidly changing circumstances and situations
  • Experience as a Foreman
  • Any experience for these above would be considered as an asset
Education/Certification/Designation

  • High School Diploma (GED)
  • Canadian Railroad Operating Rules (CROR) or US Operating Rules/On-Track Safety USOR/OTS) Qualification
  • Ability to obtain Qualification Standards Operating Crews (QSOC) within one year
  • Ability to obtain Track Inspection Guidelines (TIG) qualification within one year

  • Superior understanding of track inspection and the seriousness of various types of defects
  • Knowledge of safe operating practices, regulatory rules, environmental and safety regulations
  • Any knowledge for any of the above would be considered as an asset
