    Job Description Summary
    The individual will work directly with Dr. Turvey at the BC Children s Hospital Research Institute, to support research infrastructure, which will include: research personnel admin, research ethics and regulatory admin; and the coordination of knowledge translation/outreach activities.

    Organizational Status
    The Research Assistant will report directly to the Principal Investigator (Dr. S. Turvey) and has working relationships with other faculty, staff, and students within the lab.

    Work Performed

    • Provides administrative support that respects confidentiality and ensures that administrative matters are organized and dealt with in a professional manner.
    • Aids in the preparation and submission of research related regulatory documents (ethics, permits, etc).
    • Contributes input to grant applications; conducts computerized literature searches as needed, reviewing articles and creates annotated bibliographies based on the articles.
    • Plans meetings and takes, transcribes and distributes minutes related to research activities.
    • Prepares documents, including correspondence, reports, newsletters, posters, presentations, and quarterly reports.
    • Maintains a consistently updated and accurate appointment schedule for the Principal Investigator. Coordinates meetings ensuring well-defined and timely agendas, identification of and notification to interested parties, compilation of background information and supporting materials and preparation of packages/summary documents to assist in decision making and meeting facilitation. Makes catering, travel and accommodation arrangements. Attends meetings and in-services as required.
    • Maintains and updates the Principal Investigators essential documentation Curriculum Vitae and biosketches with associated attachments in a variety of formats.
    • Formats letters, tables and charts.
    • Performs other related duties as required.

    Consequence of Error/Judgement
    Ability to work collaboratively and exercise sound judgement in dealing with administrative matters where there are no established policies, procedures or guidelines is essential. Failure to act in a professional, tactful manner would have an adverse effect on campus and community relations.

    Errors in the management of research accounts, as well as errors in reporting procedures, could result in a waste of financial resources, non-renewal of research funding or loss of currently held funding. Inadequate documentation, organization, communication, and planning may adversely affect the image and reputation of the Principal Investigator and the project team.

    The research assistant will report primarily to the Principal Investigator and will work closely with other lab members. It is expected that the research assistant be able to work independently and be pro-active in identifying challenges to the progress of the project.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Preferred Qualifications
    Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline preferred. Experience with project evaluation, database management, online literature searches and web-based applications (including WordPress and social media management) an asset. Ability to effectively use MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint. High degree of computer literacy with ability to use word processing, spreadsheet, internet and electronic mail applications (on PC and Mac OS) at an intermediate level. Ability to take and transcribe accurate meeting minutes and follow up on action items with ease. Superior organizational and time management skills. Effective oral and written communication, interpersonal, and multi-tasking skills. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, for both academic and community audiences. Ability to work both independently and within a team environment. Attentive to detail, with the ability to work quickly and accurately. Ability to exercise tact and discretion when handling sensitive and/or confidential matters.
