The Manager, Food Services, Environmental and Patient Transport Services is accountable for providing leadership, direction and expertise in all aspects of the provision of nutrition services, transport and environmental services to patients/residents, staff and visitors at Providence Health Care (PHC), and ensuring all standards are in keeping with best practice guidelines and Public Health regulations.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supported by Operational Leads in Environmental services and Food services, provides daytoday management of the Food Services and Environmental Services departments.
  • Makes decisions on immediate operational matters including equipment malfunction, repairs, staffing shortages, issues of insubordination, reprimand, etc.;
  • Hiring staff/replacing and scheduling staff within budget and under extraordinary circumstances;
  • Investigate patient/resident complaints and concerns related to patient/resident food services or facility cleanliness; conducts investigation, assess situation, makes process improvements recommendations for changes, following up with key stakeholders, in a timely manner to ensure implementation;
  • Makes recommendations for patient/resident meal services changes, while assessing the impact;
  • Reviews and approves employee work assignment needs and/or human resources;
  • Monitors and reports on additional human resources which consistently exceed allotted budgets;
  • Determines, implements and monitors initiatives to increase quality;
  • Responds to all corporate concerns, including infection control, risk management, patient affairs, patient flow, etc.
  • Works with the Senior Director Environmental, Patient/Resident Food and Transport Services in the creation and enhancement of departmental operating policies and procedures including: corporate safety and other standards
  • Collaborates with the Food Service staff to monitor Public Health Food Safety and product recalls/notices, ensuring the timely withdrawal of products.
  • Works collaboratively with peers in similar positions at the other Unity Health locations (St. Michael¿s Hospital and St. Joseph¿s Healthcare Centre)

Qualifications:

  • Diploma in Food Management required; Degree in Food Management/Human Nutrition preferred
  • O.H.H.A Certificate preferred
  • Completion of Environmental Management Level 1 certificate preferred
  • Membership with the Canadian Society of Nutrition Management required,
  • Dietitians of Canada membership preferred;
  • Five (5) years¿ related experience working as a Manager in Healthcare Patient/Resident Food Services environment or recognized equivalent required;
  • Experience working in a computerized diet office utilizing procurement operating systems;
  • Experience working in a computerized diet office utilizing menu/diet types planning operating systems;
  • Experience managing financial reports with understanding of Ministry guidelines required;
  • Experience managing in a unionized work environment required;
  • Working knowledge of complex nutritional needs of Hospitalized patients and LTC residents including modifications required for a range of medical conditions including Diabetes, Renal Disease, Diet Texture and Fluid modifications;
  • Working knowledge of the MOHLTC Act required with detailed understanding of LTC; standards and requirements for Food services and Housekeeping;
  • Excellent understanding of large scale food procurement, production and service required;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required;
  • Strong dietetic experience both from a clinical and management perspective required;
  • Consistently demonstrates knowledge and expertise in Hospital based standards/LTC standards required;
  • Demonstrates strong communication skills with the ability to listen for clarity and meaning, speaking in an honest and straightforward manner to ensure mutual understanding in a conversation;
  • Demonstrates caring and respect for coworker(s), patient(s), resident(s) or family member(s).
