A Little More About the Role

This role is based in Edmonton and will require travel within Central Alberta. The successful applicant will be working on active construction sites and will need to be prepared for varying weather conditions. Increased working hours during the construction season are to be expected.

While no two days are ever the same, what you can expect to be doing in the role is:

    • Technical Survey Execution: Oversee and perform field survey activities as needed – including preliminary/topographic surveys, construction layout, and as-built surveys for subdivision and community infrastructure projects. Ensure proper survey control setup, calibration, and maintenance of all survey equipment.
    • Survey Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC): Assist with creating QA/QC processes for all survey work. Assist with developing and enforcing survey workflows, best practices, and documentation standards to ensure accuracy and consistency in deliverables.
    • Project Support & Coordination: Provide high-level support to project administrators and project managers on major land and community development projects (including large-scale municipal and land development initiatives). Assist in scoping projects and defining survey requirements in collaboration with project managers and other stakeholders. Coordinate survey scopes and ensure alignment with project goals.
    • Mentorship & Team Leadership: Mentor and guide field survey crews, fostering skill development and ensuring sound surveying practices. Support future crew leads through comprehensive training and knowledge transfer to build leadership capacity within the team.
    • Site Audits & Compliance: Conduct regular site audits to evaluate contractor performance, identify survey discrepancies or construction deficiencies, verify survey accuracy and safety compliance, and ensure that field work adheres to project specifications and industry standards. Clearly document and report audit findings to project administrators and crew leads, helping drive corrective actions.
    • Equipment & Resource Management: Manage survey equipment and materials. Ensure total stations, GPS units, levels, and other surveying instruments are properly calibrated and maintained. Confirm that necessary supplies – lath, hubs, paint, stakes, and other survey equipment – are stocked and available for projects.
    • Field Coordination: Attend and actively contribute to field coordination meetings (organized by Project Administrators), providing updates on survey progress, addressing any survey-related issues, and aligning field activities with overall project schedules.
    • Technical Support & Troubleshooting: Act as a go-to technical resource for field surveyors. Handle troubleshooting calls and questions from field teams, providing guidance to resolve on-site challenges; collaborate with or escalation issues to Project Administrators when additional support is required.
    • Proposal Support and Estimating: Prepare detailed survey estimates and quotations for project proposals and scoping efforts. Work with project managers to define survey effort, timelines, and resources needed for new projects or change orders, ensuring proposals and scopes are accurate and comprehensive.
    • Continuous Improvement & Industry Knowledge: Stay up-to-date with market trends, emerging technologies, and evolving best practices in surveying and geomatics. Drive innovation by incorporating new techniques (e.g., UAV/drone surveying, 3D scanning and point clouds, improved data processing methods) and promote ongoing training and knowledge transfer within the survey team to maintain a cutting‑edge practice.
    • Certification and Close-Out Management: Assist with the tracking and completion of project close-out requirements. Assist with maintaining the Construction Completion Certificate (CCC) and Final Acceptance Certificate (FAC) tracking lists, and ensure all necessary documentation is prepared and submitted on time to facilitate project handover and closure.
