Job Description:


Reporting to the Manager of Professional Practice, the Clinical Extern Coordinator (CEC) serves as a role model and leader to support care that optimizes patient outcomes and experiences while enhancing the safety, efficiency, effectiveness and accessible care delivery.


The Ontario Government has approved Cambridge Memorial Hospital's participation in the Enhanced Extern Program (EEP), allowing clinical learners to work as Clinical Externs as additional health human resources.

Clinical Externs can be clinical learners in nursing, respiratory therapy, medicine and paramedic programs.

Externs are unregulated health care providers and should work as part of an interprofessional team under the supervision of registered health care providers.

The Clinical Extern Coordinator is a non-supervisory role to complement the clinical supervision model.

The Clinical Extern Coordinators will support recruitment, education and development, provide mentorship and leadership, support, team integration, coordination and overall program implementation and evaluation.


  • Assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating education for clinical externs and the interprofessional team
  • Enhancing current knowledge and skills of theory and practice in their area of specialty through continuous learning
  • Serving as a clinical practice/education resource using sound clinical judgement
  • Being change agents and roles models that advocate for and create learning/education environments that enhance clinical and professional practice and lifelong learning
  • Working with other clinical leaders to support the development of staff, including participation in corporate education and other initiatives
  • Collaborating with interprofessional teams and external partners to influence and advance best practices in education and evidence based practice

Qualifications:


  • Must be Registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is required (or Diploma in Nursing with Baccalaureate degree in related health care field)
  • Master's degree in Nursing or related health care field, or evidence of working towards is preferred
  • Must have a minimum of 35 years of recent acute care experience with demonstrated clinical expertise/advanced knowledge
  • Recent previous experience teaching, working with learners and/or preceptoring required
  • Formal teaching preparation as an educator or evidence of working towards is preferred
  • Previous experience in clinical nursing training/education and group/meeting facilitation preferred
  • Previous experience as a Clinical Instructor or placement supervisor an asset
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles and/or adult education certification
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary team
  • Demonstrated ability to complete multiple tasks and competing priorities
  • Demonstrated change management, critical thinking and effective project management skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission and values of Cambridge Memorial Hospital
  • Must have an excellent attendance record
