We are seeking a
Staff Lawyer, Family Duty Counsel, to join our team.


The Opportunity
Reporting to the Manager, Family Law Advice Services, as
a Staff Lawyer, Family Duty Counsel, your primary function is to:

  • Provide services for Vancouver and other court locations
  • Works within the context of LABC policies and is responsible for providing legal advice and limited representation in the full range of family/child protection law practice, with some administrative legal support.
  • Works with a group of lawyers who provide direct client advice services, and will liaise with other local justice stakeholders.
  • Provides operational support to Family Law Services in developing legal services, programs and law reform.

Key accountabilities include, but aren't limited to:

  • Provides family/child protection law services including summary legal advice and information to clients, limited representation, and duty counsel services in courts as assigned.
  • Conducts legal research and prepares required documents.
  • Develops solutions to family legal problems and provides services for clients in all types of family law matters.

You have:

  • A degree from a Law School of recognized standing and membership or eligibility for membership in the Law Society of British Columbia.
  • A preference for four (4) to eight (8) years of call to the bar in British Columbia, with significant practice experience in family and child protection law.
  • Experience supervising support staff.
  • Experience at Provincial and Supreme Court levels involving the full range of family and child protection law issues.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

This position requires some local travel:

  • A valid BC driver's license is required.
  • Must be willing and able to travel occasionally throughout Metro Vancouver.
