Job Summary
A key position is available immediately for a highly motivated individual in any field related to neuroethics to join the dynamic team at UBC.
Under the supervision of the Director of Neuroethics Canada, and International Neuroethics Patent Initiative (INPI) Principal Investigator (PI) for Canada Dr.
Judy Illes, this Research Assistant will join a team of researchers devoted to examining trends in brain-related patents and intersections between intellectual property protections (IP), human rights, and open science (OS), neurotechnology, and other major topics pertaining to neuroethics.
The position will be dedicated to delivering evidence-based ethics recommendations for Canadian neuroscience innovation and IP based on both quantitative and qualitative empirical data, as well as other guidance arising from related projects.

Interaction and liaisons:
INPI and Neuroethics Canada collaborators, staff, graduate research assistants, research assistants, and research interns.
Work Performed
The responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:
- Perform data collection, analysis and interpretation of results to inform evidence-based deliverables leading to best practices for IP and OS.
- Assist with the development of quantitative and qualitative studies to deliver best practices for Canadian and global neuroscience.
- Coordinate the daily operations of the research, including scheduling weekly meetings and presentations and participating in lab meetings, student mentoring, and grant reporting.
- Prepare first draft of grant reports and publications
- Assist the Director on new neuroethics initiatives and other matters that pertain to the INPI and other research, educational and outreach programs at Neuroethics Canada.
- Participate in and present at external meetings and conferences.
Failure to use good judgement, organize work, or provide accurate information regarding INPI research, key activities, and related communications would have a serious direct or indirect impact on the credibility of the professional and stakeholder communities.
Inappropriate management of confidential documents and information could have an adverse effect on faculty, staff or students, or on UBC or collaborative partners.
Supervision ReceivedReports directly to the Director of Neuroethics Canada. Direction may be provided on occasion from co-Principal Investigators in the INPI program. Performance will be evaluated against set objectives.

Undergraduate research students and interns.
Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one's own
- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one's own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion
- Graduate degree in a relevant discipline or graduation from a technical college or institute in a discipline relevant to neuroethics: e.g., neuroscience, population and public health, health law, medical anthropology, medical sociology.
- Minimum of oneyear related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience, especially with respect to neuroethics, intellectual property and open science.
- Excellent academic credentials.
- Working knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methodology and design.
- Computer proficiency.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational skills, oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
