Serving students, staff, faculty and our wider community across all three campuses, the VPFA (Vice President Finance and Administration) leads and develops foundational support services to help achieve SFU's academic, research and community engagement missions.

We deliver SFU's day-to-day operational and administrative needs through the work of Ancillary Services; Facilities Services; Finance; IT Services; and Safety & Risk Services.

Safety and Risk Services supports excellence in learning, teaching and research across the SFU community through collaboratively facilitating and advancing world-leading standards and practices in safety, security and the management of risk.

Reporting to the Director, Research & Laboratory Safety, and in collaboration with the Program Managers in Research Safety, the Research Safety Coordinator, EHRS coordinates and delivers lab safety training for SFU faculty, staff and students.

The incumbent is responsible for developing course content, documentation, and other support materials; coordinating registration, equipment and facilities; administering and marking tests and quizzes; responding to queries about training; and recommending changes to the training programs.

The incumbent conducts risk assessments and investigations for minor incidents and prepares reports for incidents occurring in laboratories; participates on and supports local health & safety committees; maintains and updates the Environmental Health & Research Safety (EHRS) website; coordinates the hazardous material door signage program and online system; and coordinates and participates in safety events.

The Research Safety Coordinator assists the Program Managers in coordinating and conducting laboratory inspections and performing hazardous material exposure assessments.


Qualifications:


Undergraduate degree in Sciences, Occupational Safety, or Chemical Engineering and two years related experience including experience in training development and delivery, incident investigations and safety inspections in a consulting, municipal, or educational setting, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.


  • Good knowledge of municipal, provincial and federal legislation (e.g., WorkSafe BC Occupational Health & Safety Regulation) and relevant hazardous materials regulations and standards.
  • Excellent knowledge of laboratory operations and the ability to conduct assessments of research laboratory facilities in terms of work techniques, procedures and hazards.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral, written, and presentation).
  • Excellent organizational, analytical reasoning and problemsolving skills.
  • Strong research and technical writing skills.
  • Ability to prepare and present comprehensive plans and reports.
  • Ability to develop, implement and evaluate training courses and programs.
  • Proficient in the use of content management systems, enterprise level information systems, and learning management systems.
  • Proficient in the use word processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation software.
  • Ability to demonstrate mature judgment, initiative, empathy, and tact.
  • Ability to arrange suitable transportation when travelling to other campuses and work locations.
