The Institute's research focuses primarily on evidence, health system evaluation, brain health, geriatrics and rehabilitation, and primary care.


Function summary


The Research Associate 1 will assist with all aspects of the research design, analysis and dissemination of two projects under the mentorship and guidance of Dr.

Heidi Sveistrup and Dr. Matthew Bromwich.

The first project aims to validate commercial hearing aids with novel sensor technology to remotely monitor the social and physical wellbeing of aging adults living in the community.

The second project aims to (i) characterize the oral health of Canadian seniors and (ii) conduct a prospective randomized controlled clinical trial of a Health-Canada approved topical antiseptic dental drug to improve this oral health status.

There are no current data on the oral health of Canadian seniors, and largely anecdotal data on what might be done preventively to improve seniors' oral health.

The Research Associate 1 activities include the development of research objectives, grant development and maintaining data integrity and analysis.

The Research Associate 1 will be familiar with research methods and software and has the ability to prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.

The individual must be adaptable, flexible, and able to multi-task and thrive in a fast-paced environment. The individual must be able to work simultaneously on multiple projects and manage a variety of stakeholders. Minimal administrative tasks are also required.

Main duties and responsibilities:

Data Collection & Analysis - 50%

  • Collect and oversee the collection of data while ensuring data quality
  • Analyze, and evaluate qualitative or quantitative data with moderate support of Investigator
  • Develop and/or adapt specific research and data collection methodologies, protocols, systems, and techniques, as appropriate to the area of research specialty with minor support of Investigator

Research Support - 40%

  • Prepare Ethics submissions with only cursory review by Investigator/no review by Investigator
  • Support manuscript and white paper writing as required
  • Support the production of conference publications and posters
  • Lead meetings with researchers and stakeholders
  • Prepare and format research findings (Excel, Graphs, Pivot Tables, etc.)
  • Present research findings to a variety of lay and scientific audiences, including manuscripts, abstracts and presentation at conferences/symposia

Administrative Support -10%

  • Recommend, implement, and administer methods and procedures to enhance operations of the project
  • Create and manage weekly schedules for participant and study staff

Required Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Master's degree with experience in health research
  • Experience in research related to healthcare, aging, and technology with use of large, administrative datasets (an asset)
  • Working knowledge of relevant data analysis software (SPSS, Excel) and Microsoft Suite (Word, PPT, Outlook, Teams).
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, manage overlapping projects, and meet deadlines
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills, including the ability to adapt to a dynamic project environment, and work in a virtual environment such as teleconferences, emeetings and video conferencing)
  • Exceptional communication skills, including written and verbal for a variety of audiences
  • Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods and data analysis.
  • Organizational skills, including the ability to adapt to a dynamic project environment, and work in a virtual environment such as teleconferences, emeetings and video conferencing.
  • Critical thinking skills and strong ability to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment and independently.
  • Exceptional communication skills, including written and verbal (in English, French considered an asset)
