- Current Registration with the Ontario College of Nurses
- Completion of a Psychiatric Nursing education program
- Familiarity with principles and practice of the Recovery Model
- Knowledge of current best practices in the treatment of substance abuse and concurrent disorders for individuals and families
- Psycho/social and mental status assessment skills
- Ability to communicate positively and professionally with family members, community providers, and physicians
- Ability to work closely as a member of a team and share responsibilities
- Ability to coordinate multiple interests to provide quality patient care
- Willingness to learn new concepts and complete additional education, including courses in Addiction and Mental Health from organizations like CAMH, UBC, RPNAO, and the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction

Reporting to the Manager, Mental Health and Addiction Services, the Registered Practical Nurse works collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team to provide patient care within the professional scope of practice. In alignment with a client-focused harm reduction philosophy, the main functions of this role are to assist our patients and colleagues in achieving positive outcomes in a safe and therapeutic environment, following Recovery Principles.
This role involves approximately six months of comprehensive training in Addiction Services across all Mental Health and Addictions programs at Brightshores Health System. The aim is to enhance skills in Addiction and Mental Health nursing through hands-on training, orientation sessions, core education, skill development, and advanced knowledge in addiction treatment. Upon completion of this learning period, the RPN will transition to a full-time position within Acute Withdrawal Management Services.
