Position Overview:


The General English Stream helps students develop English language skills for personal or professional reasons; classes focus strongly on developing fluency in speaking and listening as well as grammar, reading, and writing.

Students entering this level can communicate easily on everyday matters, but with a limited range in style and expression. They demonstrate a range of common everyday vocabulary and idioms but may avoid topics with unfamiliar vocabulary. They may be reasonably fluent and able to use the telephone for interpersonal communication. Pronunciation difficulties may exist and can still restrict overall communication.

Students at this level can write and read well about familiar topics, but still have some difficulty in more specialized contexts.

They can understand the purpose and main idea of written texts and can write short reports, short letters, and notes on familiar topics

As an instructor you will develop students' confidence and ability to communicate in complex social situations.

They will also develop their knowledge of grammatical structures, and will learn to use more complex tense and sentence forms consistently.

Students will gain an awareness of linguistic markers such as intonation, rhythm, and pitch to assist their comprehension. Vocabulary development may extend beyond the everyday, and reading and writing skills are expanded.


Responsibilities:

  • Lesson / Lecture preparation
  • Attendance Management
  • Teaching
  • Tracking progress of students studying through different modes both in class and through alternate delivery
  • Student Contact
  • Participation in teacherstudent events, activities, staff meetings and end of term ceremony
  • Preparation and invigilation of examinations
  • Marking and grading
  • Maintenance of class Nexus pages
  • Other duties as assigned

Education and Qualifications:


  • Undergraduate degree required
  • TESL or CELTA required
  • Minimum of 800 hours of experience in the following:
  • Teaching intermediate level listening strategies and pronunciation
- teaching writing for communication

  • Minimum of 1600 hours of experience in the following:
  • teaching communicative grammar at intermediate level
- furthering vocabulary acquisition, particularly idiomatic expressions and colloquialisms

  • Ability to teach conversational strategies and functions for intermediate students
  • Experience teaching English as an additional or foreign language to adults
  • Ability to design and balance course content through a combination of student interest and key topics
  • Ability to engage students whether they are in class or through alternate delivery
  • Familiarity with different English accents
  • Ability to foster confidence and independent learning in learners
  • Ability to adapt tasks and lessons to meet the diverse goals of the students.
  • Experience incorporating technology in teaching
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiating, and conflictresolution skills to deal effectively with a wide variety of situations
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs and issues of a diverse student body
  • Strong computer skills, including use of Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with online tools and resources for teaching
  • Varied teaching experience is considered an asset (in terms of skill, level, demographic, and location)
  • Preferred experience teaching students with varied language goals (postsecondary, workplace, general communication)
  • Knowledge of a language additional to English considered an asset
