Job Summary:

A Shop Foreperson's main responsibility is to oversee the daily operations of the shop.

They are responsible for coordinating and scheduling work orders, supervising mechanics, ensuring safety regulations are being followed and overseeing and ordering parts and inventory.


Duties and Responsibilities:


Scheduling and coordination of work orders:

  • Responsible for creating a schedule for the mechanics and ensuring that work orders are completed on time. This includes ensuring that the necessary parts and equipment are available.

Overseeing mechanics:

  • Responsible for supervising and training mechanics to ensure that they are performing their duties efficiently and effectively. This includes providing guidance on troubleshooting and diagnosing issues.

Ensuring safety regulations:

  • Responsible for ensuring that safety regulations and protocols are being followed by all shop personnel. This includes identifying potential hazards and implementing corrective actions.

Parts inventory management:

  • Responsible for maintaining accurate inventory records and ensuring that the necessary parts are available for repairs and maintenance.

Mechanic evaluations:

  • Responsible for evaluating the performance of mechanics and providing feedback to help them improve their skills.
Report problems with fleet and mechanics to the Director:

  • Responsible for identifying and reporting any issues with the fleet, equipment, or mechanics to the Director. This includes providing recommendations for repairs or replacements as needed.

Compile Safety Certificate records:

  • Responsible for maintaining accurate records of all Safety Certificates and ensuring that they are up to date. This includes coordinating with the mechanics to ensure that all vehicles are inspected and certified as required.

Arrange for warranty repair of buses:

  • Responsible for coordinating and arranging for warranty repairs of buses with the manufacturer or dealer. This includes following up on repairs and ensuring that they are completed satisfactorily.
Assist the Transportation Director with the shop budget and new bus order:

  • Responsible for assisting the Transportation Director with the shop budget and new bus orders. This includes providing input on equipment needs and costs, as well as coordinating with vendors and suppliers.

Purchase Orders for Shop:

  • Responsible for creating and processing purchase orders for shop supplies and equipment as needed.

Invoicing:

  • Responsible for processing invoices and tracking expenses related to the shop. This includes ensuring that all invoices are accurate and that expenses are coded correctly.
Accidents - On call with lead Mechanic and Director:

  • Responsible for being on call with the lead mechanic and Director in the event of an accident involving the fleet. This includes coordinating with the mechanics and insurance adjusters to ensure that repairs are made and that claims are processed promptly.

MPI claims/Bus Damage:

  • Responsible for coordinating and processing MPI claims and managing bus damage repairs. This includes coordinating with mechanics and insurance adjusters to ensure that repairs are completed correctly and that claims are processed promptly.

Other shop duties:

  • Ordering and monitoring fuel for the fleet
  • Required to perform other shoprelated duties as needed, such as assisting with repairs and maintenance tasks.

Qualifications, Skills and Abilities:


  • Qualifications:_
  • Interprovincial Red Seal Journeyman's Certificate
  • School Bus Safety Certificate with Manitoba Public Insurance
  • Valid Class 2 Drivers License
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Several years of experience in a related field (such as mechanic, technician, or supervisor)
  • Skills:_
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks
  • Strong problemsolving skills and the ability to troubleshoot issues
  • Effective communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to nontechnical personnel
  • Familiarity with mechanical and electrical systems
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to quality work
  • Abilities:_
  • Ability to supervise and manage a team of mechanics or technicians
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, diagrams, and schematics
