Description

Responsibilities

  • Supervision
a.

Responsible for the children's care, safety, development and well-being through the implementation of an age-appropriate program for children 2 1⁄- 5 years of age in a group setting.

b. Behavior Guidance & Positive Relationship Building Skills - responsible for guiding and redirecting children's behavior.


  • Programming
a.

Plan, implement and evaluate stimulating and varied daily, weekly, monthly and annual programs that are appropriate to the age and the development areas of the children.

b. Ensure the physical, cognitive, social and emotional development of individual child's goals and program goals are met.

c. Ensure programming is non-sexist.

d. Ensure culturally sensitive activities.

e. Ability to work with community agencies/resources.

f.

Responsible for co-coordinating and implementing activities that should include art, science, music, language, sensory activities, gross and fine motor, cognitive, field trips, outdoor play, dramatic play, manipulative, reading and math readiness.

In addition, each teacher will plan and provide a daily circle for a small group of children which will focus on the above activities.

g. Purchase appropriate tools and materials.

h.

Develop programming aids and materials that have variation and flexibility and are done in conjunction with others to facilitate each child's development such as field trips, outdoor play, sensory activities, gross, fine motor and cognitive development.

i. Focus on the child's emerging independence, self-discipline and problem solving skills.


  • Routines and Transitions
a.

Maintain flexibility within a structured routine with regard to sleeping, feeding, toileting and dressing to meet a child's basic needs.

b. Carry out routines with mínimal disruption to the child's day.

c. Use these times as opportunities for incidental learning.

d.

Encourage and provide support so that they can grow in their independence and develop a sense of mastery in regards to self-help skills.

e. Maintain safety standards.

f. Be aware of overall hygiene and health standards e.g. disinfecting change tables, lunch table, sweeping floors etc.


  • Interaction with Parents
a.

Develop a trusting, mutual respectful working relationship with parents and be a support and resource to parents where and when possible including:

b. Keeping them informed of their child;
c. Two-way communication, open-minded, non-judgmental listening and be respectful of parents' needs;
d. Providing appropriate referrals and information;
e. Responding to parents' requests for meetings.


  • Working with other Staff and Others
a. Attend meetings to exchange information and develop team goals in one's immediate team and at monthly general staff meetings.

b.

Work towards developing a trusting, co-operative working relationship under the general daycare/professional co-op philosophy with all members of the co-op.

c. Inform casuals, students and substitutes of co-op philosophy, specific duties and routines, supervise and teach them if appropriate.

d. Act as a resource to outside agencies to fulfill our legal responsibilities (e.g. child abuse).

e. Work as a team member with agencies, schools and parents to ensure consistency with child.


  • Maintenance
a.

Ensure a clean, safe and physically appropriate environment re:
standards of Ottawa Public Health Department and Child Care & Early Years Act (CCEYA).

b. Purchase equipment and materials as appropriate.

c. General upkeep of room, equipment and yard.

d. Laundry

e. Ensure regular disinfection of toys and equipment.

f. Repair sheets, toys, etc.


  • Observing and Recording/Maintaining Records
a.

Evaluate each child on arrival and relate each child's situation to next staff and document relevant information in daily logs.

b. Document and post all dietary and allergy restrictions and any medical requirements.

c. Upkeep daily attendance and records for each child (e.g. log sheets, toileting, sleep time, mealtimes, daily activities)

d. Observe and prepare evaluations of each child in the teacher's group

e. Participate in and conduct parent interviews.

f. Participate in and conduct student evaluation.

g. Participate in staff evaluation.

h. Detect possible early learning problems of children and talk to parents.

i. Complete accident reports/serious occurrences as necessary.

j. Maintain and file records


Salary:
$23.16 per hour

COVID-19 considerations:

Ability to commute/relocate:

  • Vanier, ON: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)

Education:


  • AEC / DEP or Skilled Trade Certificate (preferred)
