    Course number and title: Sessional Lecturer – PHY252H1S – Thermal Physics (0.5 FCE) – Emergency Posting

    Course description: The quantum statistical basis of macroscopic systems; definition of entropy in terms of the number of accessible states of a many particle system leading to simple expressions for absolute temperature, the canonical distribution, and the laws of thermodynamics. Specific effects of quantum statistics at high densities and low temperatures.

    Class schedule:

    Lectures: Monday 1:00pm-3:00pm and Wednesday 1:00pm-3:00pm

    Tutorials: Monday 3:00pm-4:00pm and Wednesday 3:00pm-4:00pm (Please note the tutorials will be led by the Teaching Assistant)

    The delivery method for this course is currently in-person. Please note that, in keeping with current circumstances, the course delivery method may change as determined by the Faculty or the Department.

    Sessional dates of appointment: July 1, 2024 – August 31, 2024

    Salary: Pay for half course, vacation pay included:

    Sessional Lecturer I: $9,457.90
    Sessional Lecturer I Long Term: $9,930.79
    Sessional Lecturer II: $10,121.77
    Sessional Lecturer II Long Term: $10,326.62
    Sessional Lecturer III: $10,362.76
    Sessional Lecturer III Long Term: $10,570.02

    Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in Physics required
  • Previous experience in teaching physics at the University level required
  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preference will be given to individuals with prior experience and demonstrated ability in teaching a similar course
  • Description of duties:

  • Coordination of an undergraduate course
  • Preparation and delivery of lectures in this course
  • Supervision and training of teaching assistant(s) assigned to course, including overseeing the TAs DDAH forms
  • Preparation, supervision and grading of tests and examinations in accordance with University regulations; submission of final grades
  • Providing scheduled office hours for academic counseling of students
