JOB SUMMARY


The Streetscape Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the design and implementation of streetscapes through and leading and managing streetscape studies and design guidelines.

Working with other City Departments and consultants, this role will provide continuity from the early stages of subdivision planning through the site plan approval process and on through construction and assumption.


The position requires finding a balance between the infrastructure requirements of development, active transportation needs and landscape requirements to create functional and attractive streetscapes.

This will necessitate working with engineers, utility providers, landscape architects, urban designers, and maintenance personnel to develop a comprehensive and holistic approach to street design in accordance with the City's vision for Complete Streets.

In addition to collaborating with multi-disciplinary stakeholders, the Streetscape Coordinator will also manage projects to ensure timely deliverables that address the project scope.


The position requires developing design standards for boulevard elements that will provide a basis for consistency in design and quality within intensification areas, consider evolving needs within the right-of-way to accommodate multiple modes of travel and Smart City initiatives, and ensure these standards are implemented during construction.


KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage special studies and projects related to Streetscape Design by effectively assessing and managing project costs, risks, timelines and scope, and coordinating with the project team to achieve deliverables and milestones.
  • Assist Senior Manager of Urban Design with developing policies, strategies and funding models for the delivery of streetscapes within growth centers.
  • Manage multiple complex streetscape design, coordination and implementation within the City's growth centres.
  • Coordinate regular site visits along with Landscape Inspectors, municipal inspector and consulting landscape architect to ensure streetscape construction conforms with approved landscape drawings.
  • Present updates to senior management and Council related to Markham Centre Streetscape Guidelines and other projects.
  • Work and collaborate with staff from Development Engineering, Capital Works Engineering, Asset Management, Operations and Urban Design to review and revise, from time to time or as necessary, streetscape standards and details for boulevard elements with respect to Trees for Tomorrow Streetscape Manual and other Streetscape/ Urban Design Guidelines.
  • Develop new initiatives to promote the City's Urban Design goals, and champion sustainability and Digital Strategy objectives in all areas of work.
  • Track and communicate progress of project deliverables and achievement of outcomes to the manager and senior management.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

  • University degree in Bachelor or Masters of Landscape Architecture or a related discipline, additional education or degree in Urban Design, Architecture or Planning an asset
  • Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience in the municipal or private sector
  • Full member of the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects
  • Arborist ISA certification considered an asset
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) designation in good standing or working towards a PMP designation with the Project Management Institute considered an asset
  • Experience in executing project management methodology standards and methods is an asset including developing, managing, and executing project plans
  • Demonstrated knowledge of landscape architecture, project management, streetscape design, urban design and contract management.
  • Strong knowledge of design and construction details, and specifications, related to public realm and streetscape design.
  • Familiar with policy and standards relating to the preservation and stewardship of the natural environment and sustainability in both the natural and built environment
