Position Summary:

GRT is a waste-to-resource company that produces clean construction aggregate from excess soil. Our


Resource Regeneration Facility (located in Duke Point, Nanaimo) accepts clean and contaminated soil by truck and barge from all over Vancouver Island.

Our current Plant Manager is retiring, and we are now in search of a motivated, capable Plant Manager to run our facility.

The Plant Manager oversees all daily, weekly, and monthly facility operations, reporting regularly to GRT's

Director of Operations while running the work on-the-ground.

You'll manage the site staff and schedule while working with Crew Leads to identify and promote employee growth and opportunities for development.

You'll know how the plant is running, what's coming in, what's going out, and you'll anticipate challenges before they arise.

You'll communicate regularly with the Director of Operations and other relevant departments, providing accurate, valuable reports to inform and monitor performance and planning decisions.

FACILITY MANAGEMENT

  • Accountable for facility operations including materials management, site safety & cleanliness, production volumes, and plant operating costs (fuel, labour, etc.).
  • Conduct near miss, injury, and collision investigations, complete corrective actions promptly and communicate resolutions broadly.
  • Understand and track plant equipment performance. Plan and oversee scheduled maintenance and respond to unscheduled maintenance needs (assign staff, order parts, hire subcontractors to complete repairs, review invoices). Create and manage plant maintenance and repair budget.
  • Review plant equipment, methods, and material handling processes to continuously improve operational efficiency, safety, and ability to produce high quality, saleable outputs.
  • Collaborate with management and contractors when facility construction projects are undertaken.
  • Manage and maintain inventory of chemicals, spare parts, and other supplies.

STAFF MANAGEMENT

  • Supervise hourly staff. Responsible for staff scheduling to meet project needs.
  • Provide training, support, and direction to employees.
  • Ensure that staff adhere to standard operating procedures and complete daily administrative functions (processing logs, reports, safety paperwork, etc.).
  • Identify aptitude and growth potential among employees, make recommendations for skills training, professional development, and mentorship opportunities.
  • Hold employees accountable through leadership, recognition, and discipline.
  • Conduct daily shift meetings, communicating appropriate safety and operational messages, take suggestions, answer questions, identify needs, find resources.
  • Maintain and approve weekly payroll and monthly expense entries for site staff.
  • Interview and hire new staff.
  • Configure staff profiles in Health & Safety training system and confirm their ongoing training & compliance, participate in joint health & safety committee.

MATERIAL MANAGEMENT

  • Track daily soil quality and quantity at three key stages: incoming, processing, & outgoing.
  • Anticipate site capacity challenges and develop solutions in advance.
  • Organize and schedule incoming material delivery e.g., barge ramp & tug bookings, truck scheduling, and related logistics.
  • Continuously monitor compliance with site permits, regulations, company requirements, and project specifications.
  • Identify and arrange transport of processed materials to outgoing markets, negotiate pricing in coordination with the Director of Operations.
  • Ensures all soil relocation notifications are complete.
  • Oversee quality control & sampling of processed materials.

REPORTING FUNCTIONS

  • Provide daily updates to Director of Operations regarding plant operations, materials management, staffing and related issues.
  • Work with Directors (Operations, Finance, HR) as required to ensure the safe, profitable, and successful facility operations.
  • Collect & maintain uptodate and accurate data on plant productivity, equipment performance, fuel consumption, budgets, financial metrics, etc., and report to Directors (Operations, Finance, HR).

Required Experience

  • 510 year of progressive experience in project management, site supervision, and facility operation.
  • Experience producing accurate reports within established deadlines.
  • Experience with facility scheduling and logistics.

Preferred Experience

  • Supervisory experience in two or more of the following areas would be an asset: waste management, heavy machinery operation, mining, mill operations, refining, water treatment, material handling, marine transport, aggregates.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for mechanical repair.

Educational and Technical Requirements

  • Technical Certification, Trade certification (or equivalent), and/or degree/diploma in engineering, logistics or related field is an asset.
