Working for the Department/Faculty


Facilities Services is accountable to ensure planning and resourcing for the delivery of maintenance, custodial and inspection services to Campus Services' physical assets, comprising approximately 60 buildings with a total area in excess of 160,000 square meters.


Position


Under the general supervision of the Finishing Foreman, the journeyman painter performs paintings and paint-related activities in all the areas of Campus services including residence, offices, common areas, ect.

The incumbent interacts with other divisions and contractors to ensure that coordinated, efficient and timely services are provided, and is able to work with minimum supervision.

The painter assists the foreman with training and supervision 10-20 summer staff.


Duties
Application of coating - 60%

Preparation of substrates - 20%

  • Demolition
  • Mold removal
  • Access panel installation
  • General carpentry
  • Structural and semistructural repairs
  • Drywall replacement
  • Taping, texturing and plater lathe repair
  • Concrete work
Toxic Materials Management - 10%

  • Mold
  • Lead based coatings
  • Solvents and thinners
  • Paints
  • Containment
  • Abatement
  • Disposal
Furniture finishing and refinishing, wallpapering, sandblasting, power washing - 10%

  • Removal of various finishes from various items of furniture by use of chemicals, scrapers, and sandpaper
  • The mixing of stains and fillers to required match
  • Color matching is very important process in finishing and refinishing furniture
  • Estimate the amount of material required to complete each project
  • Removal of graffiti from various surfaces
  • Preparation of various surfaces to accept paint and other coatings
  • Cleaning the exterior of buildings
Other Duties as required.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Journeyman and painters trade certificate (3 years apprenticeship program)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years on the job work experience
  • Asbestos Awareness (Alberta Human Resources & Employment issues)
  • Mold
Awareness

  • Must have training in health and safety codes, toxic waste disposal, proper handling and storage of toxic and flammable materials
  • WHMIS Certificate
  • First Aid Training, Occupational Health and Safety Act Training
  • Fall Prevention Training
  • Customer Service Training
