Overall Accountability


The Indigenous Wellness Worker provides counselling support to students and families to increase the student's chances of success by developing positive skills that assist them in managing issues and events impacting their functioning.

The Indigenous Wellness Worker is accountable for the development and facilitation of interventions designed to foster and promote stable home and community relationships.

Utilizing systemic approaches, the Indigenous Wellness Worker enhances students social/emotional wellbeing in home and school environments by establishing settings that promote mental health and wellness.

Specific Accountabilities

  • Delivers trauma informed and culturally sensitive counselling support to students and their families
  • Suggests opportunities for families to develop skills promoting mental wellness
  • Consults with school personnel to foster environments supporting the social/emotional wellbeing of students
  • Delivers crisis intervention and management to the home and school community, i.e., child welfare concerns, suicidal ideation, nonsuicidal selfinjury, etc.
  • Enhances communication and relationships between school and home environments
  • Supports family functioning through psychoeducational support and resource support
  • Works collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and in consultation with Psychologists, Social Workers and Consultants, Instructional Services to provide resources and strategies for the student, family and school personnel
  • Day and evening work hours are required

Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's Degree in Psychology or Social Work
  • Minimum of three (3) years' experience providing support to Indigenous children, youth and families
  • Experience in the counselling of children, youth and families in relation to emergent social/emotional/behavioural issues
  • Experience in facilitation of psychoeducational presentations
  • Experience working with community resources and agencies, including Indigenous Nations, Bands or Tribes
  • Current Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid certificates
  • Valid Alberta Driver's License and a vehicle in good operating condition
  • Strong background in Indigenous cultures, languages and ways
  • Demonstrated collaboration and teambuilding skills
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
