The Durham Catholic District School Board is located just east of Toronto and is renowned for providing comprehensive Catholic education to over 21,150 students in 39 elementary schools, 7 secondary schools, and 6 continuing and alternative education centers throughout Durham Region.


POSITION:
SOCIAL WORKER (1.0 FTE*)

(0.6 FTE Permanent, 0.4 FTE contract)


START DATE:
As soon as possible


CONTRACT TERM:
End date of June 30, 2023 with potential for extension.


SALARY:
As per APSSP collective agreement ($62,855 - $93,709)

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The primary function of the Social Worker/Attendance Counsellor is to assist the student in coping/alleviating circumstances, which adversely affect the student's ability to benefit from the educational process.
  • To provide individual, family or group counselling/therapy on a shortterm basis for those students and/or families who are experiencing difficulties which may interfere with the ability of the students to function in the school setting.
  • To respond to crisis situations.
  • To consult with personnel regarding social work/mental health assessments, recommendations and/or interventions.
  • To empower students and their families to access and effectively use community resources.
  • To make referrals to and act as a liaison with appropriate outside agencies.
  • To provide individual/family social work assessments as they relate to educational, emotional, social, or behavioural issues. To assist school personnel in addressing problems related to attendance.
  • To assume primary responsibility for addressing severe attendance cases (after the exhaustion of all internal and community resources, the Social Worker/Attendance Counsellor may lay charges of nonattendance in the Provincial Court-Family Division).
  • To undertake tasks as required by SAL guidelines.
  • To deliver workshops and inservice programs to students, school personnel and families in areas related to interpersonal and social issues (e.g., family relationships, selfesteem, drug abuse, adolescent issues, conflict resolution).
  • To act as a resource to the Identification, Placement and Review Committee (IPRC) and Case Conference(s), when requested.
  • To document all interventions and prepare professional reports as required.
  • To ensure that students and their families are provided culturally sensitive services that enhance students' learning experiences.
  • Provide school board representation of community committees as required.
  • To carry out such duties as may, from time to time, be assigned by the Superintendent of Education
  • Student Services, Manager of Clinical Services and the Superintendent of Education
  • Family of Schools.
  • Participate on the Community Threat Assessment and Intervention Team (C-TAIP) as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Experience

  • Professional experience in a school board setting.
  • Previous experience in threat risk assessment an asset.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

  • Registered and in good standing or eligible for registration with OCSWSSW.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with multiple disciplines.
  • Ability to foster and maintain excellent working relationships with community partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess a broad range of psychosocial issues that impact student achievement and proven ability to develop effective intervention plans to address the same.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide short term evidence based interventions with children, youth, families and groups within a school setting.
  • Excellent crisis intervention skills.
  • Working knowledge of the duties and responsibilities of an Attendance Counsellor and proven ability to intervene effectively with students with attendance concerns.
  • Excellent interpersonal, time management and oral and written communication skills.
  • Must have valid driver's license/insurance and consistent use of a vehicle.
  • Criminal Background Check suitable to the Board is a condition of employment.
