Your Opportunity

  • Under the general direction of the Manager, Risk and Safety Services, the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Advisor is responsible for administering Okanagan College's Health and Safety Management System and fostering a culture of health and safety at all college locations.
  • The OHS Advisor contributes to the planning, developing, implementing, and administering health, safety and emergency plans, programs, policies, procedures, and protocols in accordance with the mission, values, goals, and policies of Okanagan College. The Occupational Health and Safety Advisor ensures that Okanagan College remains current with respect to best practices in health, safety, and emergency management.
  • The OHS Advisor is responsible for the development and administration of health and safety education, training and orientation programs for management, staff, students, and contractors. The OHS Advisor is also responsible for conducting health and safety assessments, inspections, and investigations.
    Functions and Duties

Innovative Solutions and Continuous Improvement:


  • Administers the Occupational Health and Safety Management System including the development and implementation of safety policies, programs, procedures, and monitoring systems in a cycle of continuous improvement.
  • Assists with the development, implementation, and administration of emergency management plans and activities in a cycle of continuous improvement.
  • Develops, reviews, and updates Okanagan College's Occupational Health and Safety Manual and associated resources.

Policy and Compliance Oversight:


  • Ensures Okanagan College's Occupational Health and Safety Management System maintains compliance with applicable legislative and regulatory requirements including the Worker's Compensation Act.
  • Oversees employee safety training and tracking of qualifications at all campuses, including new employee safety orientation, WHMIS, confined space, working with asbestos, forklift operator and first aid.
  • Issues stop work, isolation, or lock out orders as required to maintain compliance and safety in the workplace.

Strategic Analysis and Reporting:


  • Conducts investigations, inspections, audits, and gap analysis; produces reports to summarize findings, provide recommendations, and track corrective actions.
  • Develops, generates, and presents reporting on the trends and performance of the OHS management system to various stakeholders.
  • Maintains occupational health and safety records and statistics.

Technical Expertise and Skill Application:


  • Active in risk identification, assessment, mitigation, response, and recovery.
  • Administers the Occupational First Aid Program and responds to critical incidents.
  • Administers the Hazardous Materials Safety Program including overseeing the safe use, storage, transportation, and disposal of hazardous materials at all College locations.
  • Performs hazard assessments, ergonomic assessments, and job demand analysis.
  • Administers WorkSafe BC claims; ensures workplace injuries are properly reported and collaborates with stakeholders to ensure injured workers are supported through the WorkSafeBC claims process; assists with the development and implementation of graduated return to work plans.
  • Administers Health Monitoring systems for employees exposed to hazards such as ergonomic related issues, noise, vibration, air quality, and chronic chemical exposure.

Stakeholder Engagement and Communication:


  • Develops and implements safety awareness communications, campaigns, and promotional activities.
  • Collaborates with stakeholders on the development and implementation of safe work procedures throughout the College providing additional orientation, coaching, and mentorship as required.
  • Maintains and updates Okanagan College health, safety and emergency management websites, apps, and software systems.

Resource Management:


  • Supports the Manager, Risk and Safety Services, to plan and develop short and medium range plans, operating and capital budgets for the Division.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
    Education and Experience
  • Two to four years of education in occupational health and safety or a related discipline is required. Designation as a Canadian Registered Safety Technician or Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) is required. Five years of progressive work experience in occupational health and safety is required. A current Occupational First Aid Certificate, Level 2 and class 5 BC driver's license is required. Experience within postsecondary or a multiunionized environment is considered an asset.
