New employees must provide documentation/proof of full COVID-19 vaccination status, a 2-step TB screening, as well as proof of immunity to measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (chickenpox) prior to their start date at St.

Mary's General Hospital. Staff will require clearance from Employee Health and Wellness before they are able to begin any position within SMGH.


Position Summary:


Clinical Externs can be nursing students enrolled in any year of a College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) approved Baccalaureate Nursing (BScN or BN) program, or Practical Nursing (PN) program.

Internationally educated nurses who have initiated registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), have received a CNO letter of direction and meet one of the following criteria are also eligible for the program: Are in any year of study in a CNO approved program, such as a BScN-IEN program, PN-IEN program; or are completing a micro-credential plan with curriculum to meet the CNO requirements for registration, or have completed their educational requirements (e.g.

BScN-IEN/PN-IEN or micro credentialing) and are waiting to write the registration exam.


Externs are unregulated healthcare providers and will work as part of an inter-professional team under the supervision of regulated health care providers to provide holistic, high quality, and safe care to patients.

The Nursing Extern will practice in a manner consistent with the professional standards of the College of Nurses of Ontario, evidence-based nursing practices, and the standards set by St.

Mary's General Hospital. This is a paid position as part of the Ontario Government's Enhanced Externship Program.


Position Responsibilities:


  • Practices under the direct and indirect supervision of the professionals on the unit and in a manner consistent with organizational policies and professional standards
  • Works with unit professionals to ensure knowledge, skill and judgement required to perform duties are met
  • Assisting with activities of daily living (ADL's): i.e. hygiene, dressing, repositioning, toileting and incontinence care
  • Provides assistance with lifting, turning, transferring, transporting, as per SMGH standards
  • Encouraging the mobility of patients: ambulation, active/passive range of motion exercises
  • Assists with comfort measures and patient safety by ensuring the environment is clean and tidy and free of hazards
  • Requests assistance with assigned duties whenever in need
  • Participate actively as a team member
  • Required to complete other duties as assigned. This may include vital signs, falls risk assessment, Braden assessment and potential delegated tasks for extern
  • Documents in the clinical record according to organizational standards

Position Requirements:


  • Nursing students enrolled in any year of a College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) approved Baccalaureate Nursing (BScN or BN) program, or Practical Nursing (PN) program
  • Current certificate in Basic Cardiac Life Support required, renewed annually
  • Demonstrated knowledge of infection prevention and control practices
  • Comprehensive clinical skills and competencies
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proven problem solving, decision making, critical thinking, organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work as an effective member of an interprofessional team
