GENERAL SUMMARY
Under the general supervision of the Utilities Chief Operators or Utilities Supervisor, OIT (Operators In-Training) at the
District of Squamish assist with the operation and maintenance of the Water Supply & Distribution System, Wastewater
Collection System and Wastewater Treatment Plant.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Customer Service
- Fosters the District of Squamish corporate values in their work; thinking beyond today, working together, acting with
- Follows the District of Squamish's Customer Service Guidelines to ensure the Delivery of Outstanding Service.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Effectively responds to public enquiries in a timely manner in the absence of the Operators or Supervisor.
- Conducts maintenance, construction, operation, and labouring duties on the District's Water and Wastewater Utility
treatment systems including water wells, chemical dosing pumps, PRV's, booster pumps, fire hydrants, lift stations,
manholes, services, mains, mechanical and biological wastewater treatment plant processes and other water and
wastewater related infrastructure under the supervision of qualified operators.
- Performs confined space entries.
- Performs flagging duties, directs, or controls traffic at work sites.
- Operates municipal equipment in a safe and efficient manner according to legislation and applicable District of
- Collects data using manual and electronic processes.
- Other duties as required including labouring tasks.
- Carries out the work in accordance with established safe work procedures and participates in Occupational Health and
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and precautionary measures as related to the operation of various
- Demonstrated physical strength, stamina and coordination to perform heavy manual outdoor work.
- Basic knowledge of operation, maintenance, repair and construction of water and sewer utility operations.
- Basic knowledge of the Public Works Department assets and their maintenance requirements.
- The ability to operate small equipment safely and under mínimal supervision.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to deal with people in a professional manner.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and procedures.
- Good organizational skills and the ability to multitask.
- Intermediate level computer skills (MS office software suite, mobile smart phones and tablets)
- Ability to work safely in compliance with the District of Squamish Health and Safety Policy, WorkSafe BC and WHMIS
REQUIRED TRAINING, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Valid BC Class 5 Driver's Licence with a safe driving record
- Certified TCP (Traffic Control Person) and experience with TMP (Traffic Management Plans)
- Confined Space Awareness
- WHMIS
- Grade 12 or equivalent
- Two years (24 months) experience in labouring work
- Required to obtain OIT certification under the Environmental Operators Certification Program (EOCP) within six
WORKING CONDITIONS
Utility Operators work in a variety of locations including office space, lab, and outdoors in all weather conditions as well
as working in and around untreated sewage.

between the hours of 6:00am to 9:00pm. Four consecutive days with three days of rest. Some
flexibility is required, schedule may vary to include working on the weekends or evenings as per
Article 13.02 c).
Salary:
$29.91 until the time when the Employee acquires the Operator In Training Certificate, at which time
the wage rate will increase to $31.16. The position may not continue if the employee is not able
to obtain their OIT designation at the end of 6 months.
This is a Union position within the Collective Agreement of CUPE Local 2269
