Job Number:49340**As a Lot Grading Inspector, you will provide excellent customer service to the residential and commercial property owners. You will educate them and ensure they follow the City's Drainage Bylaw, Lot Grading procedures, and other guidelines that help them manage flood risk to their properties. Your success will be measured by your ability to achieve timely results in the context of a respectful, inclusive and service-minded style.

  • Verify the lot grading work of property owners, landscapers and grading contractors by conducting site inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial developments
  • Investigate and record information in response to surface drainage inquiries and complaints as required
  • Utilize strong understanding of OH&S protocols and policies, and civil construction sites to complete work safely
  • Assess potential impact of lot grading on adjacent properties, evaluate degree of nonconformance and conditionally approve or recommend proposals to rectify nonconformances
  • Authorize rough and final lot grade certificates for residential, commercial and industrial developments Verbal: utilize knowledge of engineering principles and the Drainage Bylaw to respond to telephone inquiries regarding grading concepts, regulations, techniques, drainage complaints, failed inspections, and potential solutions.
  • Site meetings: arrange/attend site meetings with affected parties to clarify deficiencies, identify solutions to grading conflicts, or interpret the Drainage Bylaw and lot grading guidelines
  • Written: complete inspection reports to indicate unacceptable items to property owner or responsible party. Compose written correspondence to property owners or responsible party detailing specific infractions of the Drainage Bylaw and identifying potential solutions for the problem. Send appropriate letters to inform property owners of approval status
  • Respond to inquiries verbally and through formal letters, utilizing knowledge of engineering principles and Drainage Bylaw 18093 explaining grading concepts, regulations and reasons of failed inspection
  • Check lot grading certificates and lot grading plans for compliance with Drainage Bylaw 18093 and lot grading guidelines and ensure any special conditions are met
  • Maintain the filing and database systems for all applicable lot grading cases and files
  • Other related duties as required

Qualifications:


  • Completion of a 2year diploma in a Civil, Structural, Architectural, Geological Engineering, Survey or Landscaping Architecture Technology
  • Minimum 2 years of experience related to lot grading, engineering survey, landscaping or civil construction
  • Must be eligible to be recognized as a Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) with ASET or provincial equivalent
  • Considerable knowledge of applicable bylaws, standards and regulations related to assigned work
  • Ability to build and maintain strong professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including strong interpersonal, verbal/written communication and conflict resolution skills
  • Strong time management skills and the ability to make decisions and perform work tasks independently
  • Ability to read, interpret and design complex and technical plans, specifications, diagrams and charts
  • Physical ability to work outside in all weather and environmental conditions
  • Ability to use a variety of computer software to complete work tasks; experience with POSSE is an asset
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace (Sheets, Docs, Slides, Forms, Drive) would be an asset
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Must arrange own transportation to be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require business auto insurance
  • Hire is dependent on Police Information Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and is a requirement of this position, there may be a cost associated with this requirement

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday
