    About Us

    At the Safety Branch of the Department of Labour and Advanced Education, we are responsible for delivering effective and efficient regulatory management for the protection of the public and workers' safety through education, outreach, inspection and enforcement, equipment registration, permits, and licenses. Our staff of over 125 employees, located throughout Nova Scotia, do this by using the Pathways to Compliance to enhance compliance of provincially regulated employees, employers and contractors through setting, promoting, verifying and enforcing requirements under various pieces of legislation.

    Join our team with the Strategic Planning and Accountability division, and you will be a valuable contributor to:

  • Gain experience in relation to legislation and regulation;
  • Conduct research
  • Supporting the development of documents, reports, and submissions to senior leadership.
  • Items of focus this year include:

  • Providing advice on policy topics that relate to the branch
  • Supporting good public policy development by working with partners such as the Workers Compensation Board
  • Supporting pieces of policy work that help contribute to regulatory changes.
  • Qualifications and Experience

    This may be the right opportunity for you, if you are currently enrolled in a Master of Business Administration, Law, library sciences or other related discipline with at least 1 full year of studies completed by May 1, 2024. You will be returning to school in the fall or next applicable semester.

    You are interested in developing your skills in options analysis, problem definition, research and build your expertise in facilitating discussions to arrive at a recommendation. You possess very good analytical and critical thinking skills.

    You possess exceptional communication (written and verbal), interpersonal and relationship building skills. You are able to prioritize competing projects.

    Competencies required at this level of work are:

    Analytical thinking, Adaptability and Flexibility, Attention to Detail, Outcome Focus, Effective Interactive Communication, Teamwork and Collaboration, and Intercultural and Diversity Proficiency.

    We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

    This is a CASUAL employment opportunity with anticipated end date of August 30, 2024. The appointment status ('term', 'temporary' or 'casual') is dependent on the start date of the successful candidate.
