Job Summary:

The Experiential Learning Officer will be primarily responsible for the development, implementation and continued management of the experiential learning program offered to all Faculty of Science students.

The Officer will generate career development opportunities for students through targeted development of relationships with new employer partners and fostering existing relationships to grow and expand placement opportunities for students.

The Officer may be called upon to provide administrative support for curriculum-based experiential learning opportunities.


Nature of work:

This position reports to the Dean or their proxy and works closely with faculty members, staff, and students.


Responsibilities/accountabilities:


Program Management and Delivery:

  • Liaises with faculty members to raise awareness about the coop/internship program and to connect with potential partners in industry and the community
  • Liaises with Academic Advising to raise awareness about the coop program and any other related programs that may be developed and to provide input on the scheduling of experiential learning opportunities (e.g., coop work terms) within a student's program map, as deemed appropriate
  • Communicates coop opportunities (and any other workintegrated learning opportunities) with potential students in all coop eligible Science programs, directly or through faculty and advisors, as deemed appropriate
  • Liaises closely with the Career Centre and Registrar's Office to ensure continued smooth administration of the coop program
  • Provides curricular input for and participates in the delivery of the Science coop preparatory course
  • Provides a comprehensive marketing strategy to strengthen the position of Faculty of Science programs relative to employment communities at the local, provincial and national levels
  • Communicates program changes to students/stakeholders in coordination with the Registrar's Office and Academic Advisors
  • Cultivates new placement opportunities, in collaboration with other university stakeholders (e.g., faculty members, the Career Centre, Office of Research Services)
  • Works with the Dean or their designate to ensure the quality of placements/worksites, to verify positions meets the criteria, to provide inplacement support and to resolve student‐related issues as required
  • Coordinates and participates in site visits of coop (or other workintegrated learning) placements
  • Assists with the development and maintenance of content for promotional materials, including webpages, ensuring content is uptodate
  • Assists with the design and delivery of student training for workforce preparedness, particularly hiring processes

Student and Employer Support:

  • Oversees the employment process related to employer job posting and hiring
  • Facilitates employer onboarding for new employer contacts
  • Supports student success through regular feedback, coaching and oneonone meetings
  • Organizes campus coop activities to promote the program
  • Works with Career Centre to identify market trends and new employment opportunities for students
  • Monitors safety/risk management of all posted placement opportunities
  • Promotes the coop programs and related events to students, employers, and relevant faculty and staff stakeholders
  • Assists with the assessment of student eligibility for Experiential Learning Programs
  • Supports employers with identifying potential funding sources associated with hiring students for placements

  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, problem solve, exercise sound judgment and respect the confidential nature of student information
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of students with a variety of abilities, cultures and backgrounds
  • Knowledge of international visas/work permits is an asset
  • Willing and able to work flexible hours to meet deadlines and to attend evening or weekend events and activities

Required Education:


  • Completion of a University program of four academic years
  • Valid Driver's License (occasional travel is required)
  • Knowledge of safety/risk management associated with studen
