Position Requirements:


The Animal Care Manager (ACM) is responsible for overseeing the daily operation of the Animal Care Department including the animal collection, exhibits and AC staff.

Monitors, cares for, and assists with management of a living animal collection, coordinates routine maintenance and enhancement of animal exhibits and support facilities, coordinates and assists with the daily duties of the Animal Care staff and acts as a liaison between other departments.

Knowledge of and adherence to policy and procedure, provincial and federal legislation, CAZA / WAZA / AZA guidelines, and regulation.

As well as a strong knowledge base of AH&W pertaining to exotic animals and collection planning.

The Animal Care Manager will oversee daily operations of the Animal Care Department, ensuring safety and security under the direction of the Director of Animal Care (DAC).

The Animal Care Manager will adhere to all health and safety regulations, legislations, and policies.


Key Responsibilities:


Animal Health & Welfare

  • Demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of AH&W concepts. Train staff on current standard, conduct barn and enclosure inspections at a predetermined frequency to ensure prescribed standard upheld.
  • Responsible for implementing Behavioural Husbandry program. Participate in planning, support goals, train and collaborate with AC staff, document, evaluate program's progress and revise as necessary.
  • Support Veterinary Team by coordinating, participating, and overseeing health checks and procedures. Responsible for supporting and implementing prescribed recovery plans, overseeing the pharmaceutical inventory, and dispensing medication as necessary. Monitor the health and well-being of living animal collection by noting physical or behavioral changes and takes appropriate action; observes for signs of illness or injury, including diet consumption and other variables to assess animal condition; records and reports problems and consults with management staff and veterinarian as necessary; observe animal behavior, report abnormal behavior patterns, and provide technical advice to management and staff. Participate in preventative health programs.
  • Demonstrate a sophisticated knowledge of Animal Nutrition. Ensure smooth transition into seasonal diets, oversee purchasing and ordering of feed products, and remain apprised of current nutritional research and trends.
  • Possess a sophisticated understanding of company Policy & Procedures. Responsible for ensuring compliance throughout the facility.
  • Responsible for the Safety & Security of the animal collection, staff, and guests through the facility. Participate in risk assessments and protocol development to ensure safe work procedures minimize risk and exposure.
  • Support Conservation efforts. Ensure programming meets AH&W standards, participate in Recovery Team meetings and presentations to facilitate guest engagement. Actively support and participate in Species Survival Plan's.
  • Responsible for ensuring the quality and accuracy of paper and electronic record keeping systems. Proficient in Species360 (ZIMS/ZIMS Medical). Collaborate with Registrar.

Human Resources

  • Lead by example. Function as a resource and mentor to staff.
  • Provide team support through onboarding, training, development to achieve set goals, and route coverage as necessary.
  • Foster growth within the organization. Provide regular feedback and participate in performance evaluations and plans.
  • Responsible for scheduling and completing payroll.

Governance

  • Actively participate in and chair Committee meetings.

Marketing / Promotions

  • Participate in zoo campaigns.
  • Develop, train, coordinate, and participate in public demonstrations and Behind-the-Scenes tours.

Planning / Development

  • Contribute to the growth and development of the facility. Participate and facilitate Capital Projects and contribute ideas for future development and expansion.
  • Participate in Institutional Collection Planning. Oversee animal acquisition and dispositions. Possess a strong knowledge of provincial, federal, and international permit and transport requirements.

Education

  • Facilitate conservation education that aligns with the facilities mission and vision. Review and develop key messaging, ensure programming messaging is current with accurate information, train staff in guest engagement, participate in and evaluate programming.
  • Address guest / public issues pertaining to the AC department.

Management

  • Support DAC. Function as Duty Manager (refer to JD Duty Manager), as scheduled.
  • Actively contribute to advancing AH&W via research, education, dissemination, and implementation.
  • Ensure all work areas and equipment are up to or above standards for functionality and cleanliness.
  • Active member of the zoos
