Position Summary
This position will provide part-time group and/or individual outreach language instruction (approximately 15-20 hours per week, plus prep time), following a task-based approach aligned to the Canadian Language Benchmarks, to adult newcomers to Canada living in smaller Centres across Nova Scotia.
Responsibilities
- Developing and delivering taskbased language instruction
- Generating language instruction plans that correspond to Canadian Language Benchmarks and support achievement of students' learning targets.
- Conducting ongoing language assessments for the purpose of evaluating student progress in language acquisition
- Remaining current on EAL and settlement issues that could impact and benefit program and students.
- Conducting client surveys and program evaluation
- Maintaining up to date records of student attendance and other information as required and directed.
Qualifications & Competencies
- Bachelor's degree from a recognized postsecondary institution
- TESL qualification for adult learners as recognized by TESL Canada
- 2 years teaching experience within English as an additional language setting
- An understanding of, and ability to apply, the principles of adult education
- An understanding of, and experience with, crosscultural matters and how they relate to learning and integration for newcomers to Canada
- Experience working with Canadian Language Benchmarks
- The ability to demonstrate positive and effective interpersonal skills
- Microsoft Office Skills
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple, competing deadlines and tasks
- Demonstrated discretion and sound judgement in the handling of confidential information
- Valid NS Driver's License, reliable vehicle essential and ability to travel
New language instructors will also be required to complete the Proficiency in English Nova Scotia Instructor Training Course (PENS) usually within the first few months of hiring.
