Who are we looking for?


We are seeking an
Environmental Monitor to join our
Vancouver, BC team of environmental leaders who are "lifelong learners" who improve our physical, social and natural environments, empower our local communities, and collectively shape the world around us.

As an
Environmental Monitor , you will be involved in providing both private and public clients with excellent strategic and technical guidance and navigation of the natural environment regulatory framework.

You will also be involved in the supervision of, and collaboration with, other ecology team members across North America. This is a key position responsible for helping grow our linear infrastructure clients for GHD's natural science business.

Working with an energetic and high performing team, this position offers a variety of work and will see you involved in

  • Conduct terrestrial and/or aquatic field programs in an accurate and complete manner using industry standard protocols, regulatory guidance and best management practices
  • Provide technical expertise on natural environment components of Environmental Management Plans, Erosion and Sediment Control Plans, Construction Environmental Management Plans, Environmental Protection Plans, Environmental Assessments, Restoration Plans, and Monitoring Programs
  • Coordinate preparation, and complete review of technical documents, including draft work plans, reports, and correspondence for internal Senior Technical Review
  • Provide environmental over site of construction activities as required
  • Assist in the development of proposals, field workplans, reporting and design drawings as well as permit, authorization, and license preparation (MECP, Conservation Authorities, etc.)
  • Work with peers, intermediate and senior staff in all aspects of project work
  • Data compilation and interpretation, evaluation of environmental regulations, preparation of environmental reports, and regulatory submissions
  • Review and interpretation of provincial and federal acts and regulations
  • Some travel to sites, primarily in the Lower Mainland
  • Providing accurate and complete field notes using traditional and digital capture methods
  • Preparation of soil management plans and collection of soil samples
  • Ensure GHD Project Management, Health and Safety and Quality Management Systems adhered to during project life cycle
  • Supervise and mentor junior technical staff
  • Organizing and leading the field portion of projects including prefield planning such as budget, safety, and equipment planning
  • Handling and disposing of samples and sampling equipment weighing up to 50lbs
  • Travelling (generally within the province) will be required an estimated 50% of time will be out of the office (dependent on project and seasonal requirements);
  • Other duties as assigned/required

What you will bring to this role:

  • 2-5 years experience.
  • Degree/Diploma in Ecology, Biology, Environmental Science, Resource Management, or related fields.
  • Registered as a Professional Biologist, Professional Agrologist, Professional Engineer or Professional Geoscientist is an asset.
  • Strong vegetation and/or wildlife identification skills are an asset
  • Experience completing Site surveys using traditional survey methods and realtime kinematic (RTK) global positioning system (GPS) units an asset
  • Experience characterizing excess soil for large construction projects, including the preparation and implementation of soil management and tracking plans is an asset
  • Accreditation in erosion and sediment control is an asset
  • Accreditation under the Riparian Areas Protection Regulation is an asset
  • Must hold a valid driver's license
  • Detailoriented, ability to provide accurate field and data records
  • Ability to read and understand engineering drawings/plans
  • Liaison with environmental regulatory agencies, nongovernment agencies, public and private resource development agencies.
  • Experience in mentoring staff
  • Comfortable working for extended durations throughout all seasons and during inclement/adverse weather conditions
