A critical role to ensure vehicle safety for everyone travelling on BC Highways


The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure plans transportation networks, provides transportation services and infrastructure, develops and implements transportation policies, and administers many related acts and regulations federal-provincial funding programs.

The Ministry strives to build and maintain a safe and reliable multi-modal transportation system and provide affordable, efficient and accessible transportation options for all British Columbians.


The Ministry's Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement Branch programs provide enforcement through the delivery of six acts and regulations designed to improve vehicle and driver fitness and the protection of the highway infrastructure.

The effectiveness of our educational, enforcement, monitoring and inspection programs motivates and facilitates safe operators, thereby securing safer highways for British Columbians.


As a mobile Enforcement Officer, the Area Vehicle Inspector (AVI) independently monitors and inspects vehicles, loads, licences, insurance, drivers, and carriers to ensure the protection of the highway infrastructure and public safety through enforcement and education, pertaining to various Acts and all pursuant regulations, programs, and standards.


This AVI position has an increased emphasis on inspecting and certifying school buses for safety and on auditing inspection facilities for compliance with programs and procedures.

This role uses technical expertise in vehicle mechanical conditions and operates with a functional job title of Motor Vehicle Inspector for the purposes of enforcement authorities.

The AVI is required to establish and maintain links and effective working relationships with a variety of associations, jurisdictions, carriers, enforcement agencies and the public.


Job Requirements:


  • Certified Journeyman Mechanic (Commercial Transport, Heavy Duty, Automotive).
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver's Licence or equivalent in good standing, with no more than nine (9) points in the last five (5) year period.
Due to the specific nature of the work, the following must be obtained:

  • Air Brake training and/or endorsement.
  • Provincial Peace Officer status.
  • Emergency Vehicle Driving Courses (i.e., PTEC, EVO, CVSE Mobile Operators).
  • Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) Certification.
  • Dangerous Goods Certification.
  • Speed Enforcement Certification/Qualification (i.e., RADAR, LASER/LIDAR).
  • Special Enforcement Training (i.e., Justice Institute of BC
  • Investigative Enforcement Skills Certificate Program).

Provisos:

  • Must maintain an active/adequate level of physical fitness.
  • Exposure to all weather conditions, vehicle fumes, and harmful materials and fluids when inspecting vehicles.
  • Involves working alone or in isolated hazardous locations.
  • Required to work modified work schedules (e.g., flex time), some shift work and irregular hours with short notice (including weekends and statutory holidays) including travel.

to be considered for this position, you must be willing and able to provide your BC commercial driver's abstract and personal driver's abstract, or other jurisdiction equivalent, upon request.

Your Personal Driving Record and Commercial Driving Record (N-Print) history must be recent (within the last five (5) years) and the abstract must be dated within 30 days of it being requested.


To be eligible, your record must have:

  • No driving suspensions.
  • No more than nine (9) points total.
  • No more than eight (8) accumulative offences, including zeropoint offences.
